SHEENS KEEN ON LUI FOR HALF-BACK
1/03/2010 5:55:09 PM

Wests Tigers Coach Tim Sheens has given his strongest indication yet that Robert Lui will be the half-back for the opening round against Manly at the Sydney Football Stadium on Monday, March 15.

Following his side’s 36-12 victory over Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks at Bluetongue Stadium, Sheens revealed Lui was set to partner Benji Marshall in the halves. Marshall missed the trial win over the Sharks with a minor ankle injury. Wests Tigers got through the trial with no injuries.

Whilst Wests Tigers fans celebrated a win after a disappointing lost to the Sydney Roosters last Sunday, Sheens was not getting too carried away.

“We need to do a fair bit more before we are going to be happy,’’ he said.

“We got through this without injury and we are winning strongly so I suppose that’s something but I wouldn’t take too much from it.

“Last week, the Roosters threw plenty at us and we fell into a hole. The Sharks dropped a lot of ball and we started poorly. Had they had been stronger with the ball in the hand we would have been in a bit of trouble.

“At the end of the day, Robbie Farah and Robert Lui both played well. Lui did step up.

“Robbie was quiet last week but this week he was much better and he led the way today on the back of some pretty solid work from the forwards.

“He got a full 80 minutes, he was creative and he worried them .He was the difference in the game.

“At the moment, I would be looking at Tim Moltzen at 1 and Robert Lui and Benji Marshall in the halves. That would the logical thing and that’s probably where we are going to go at this stage. I know what I am going to do for game one pretty well.”

Farah said he was pleased with the intensity in the defence and the hunger shown by his side.

“We were disappointed with our attitude last week, we treated it like a trial and the Roosters came out and were a lot more hungrier than us and it showed in the end result,’’ Farah said.

“In terms of tonight, we saw it as a dress rehearsal for round one. We didn’t want to go into round one on the back of two poor performances so that was a lot better.

“I got more involved tonight and there were a few more opportunities around the ruck. I was disappointed with my own game last week so tonight gives me a bit of confidence going into round one.

“My preparation for this season has been second to none and I have given myself every opportunity to start playing well from round one.”

Farah said he was more than comfortable to have Lui at half-back with Tim Moltzen at full-back. His combinations with Lui were lethal at times.

“It was a good opportunity tonight for Robbie to take a bit more control with Benji not there,’’ Farah said.

“It was important for him to lead the team around the park and I thought he was great. He took the line on a lot more than he did last week and that is when he is at his most dangerous.

“He is pretty elusive on his feet and he is a strong little boy.

“We work hard on our combinations and our skill work. Tim loves being able to work those combinations especially around the ruck and Robbie has been there throughout the pre-season. He has trained at seven so it has given us plenty of time to work on those combinations.”

Lui said he was happy with his performance and went into the game with no illusions.

“I just wanted to play good footy. I didn’t have any thoughts about round one as you never know what is going to happen in football,’’ he said.

“I played pretty good. Tim told me after the game that I still have plenty of work to do on my defence and on my attack so I just have to work on that at training.

“I have learnt plenty of things from Robbie, Benji and even Moltz, who is one year older than me. What we do at training we bring it out to the field. I am just keen to play, that’s what footy is all about.”

I am stoked that Lui has extended his contract, he's young and has loads of potential. I still prefer to see Moltzen at halfback. His combination with Benji was awesome last year almost every time they were in the halves together!!

If Lui gets up to the potential that the players and coach say he has we have a ready made half for at least 10 years. That would be like winning lotto. He has the players around him to succeed.Woodmeister

Benji didn't sign long term for no reason. He knows how good Lui is!

There is no doubt in my mind that Robert Lui is a talented half back or five eighth and will make it in the big time. Just not sure he is ready yet for the weekly grind of NRL Football. Lets see how he goes in the opening match against Manly. Not sure Tim will leave him there when Lote moves to fullback. More likely Tim will move Moltzen to halfback which may put Lui on the bench. Either way, unlike recent years, we appear to have good coverage in the halves. The Farah and Benji to half experiment and John Morris wearing the number 7 days are now over thank goodness.

If coach Tim thinks so I'll be happy for Lui at 7 as long as we don't keep changing during the season, regardless if he has a bad game or not he will only gain more confidence alonside Benji week in week out.

I'll leave these decisions to a four time premiership winning coach thanks...... Lui is capable of becoming a fine half back but it appears no one wants to give him that chance after playing only four 1st grade games.....

I think Lui is going to be a good 7 for the tigers, because the team does not need a 7 like a Thurston or Prince, all he needs is a good combination with Robbie, Benji and Moltzen witch he does have and if you were to go back and watch the games where Moltzen was a 7 you would see that Farah and Marshall ran the show and he would sit back and wait for his moments. By the way when Lui and Marshall get to run the ball there going to be Deadly. SWEET. GO TIGERS !!!

Personally i don't rate lui, i'd rather see taumata be given a chance. Look later in the year for tuqiri to play fullback and moltzen halfback its the best option for the side. with taniela and tame on the wings. With that said we all have opinions on whats best for the side but at the end of the day what we all thing doesnt matter. What does matter is us all getting behind the team regardless of who plays.UP THE TIGES

What ever happened to Wayde Dunley he would of been the answer to all of our Halfback problems, its a shame when players as good as him get overlooked.

Whatever Tim Sheens says is good enough for me. He is an outstanding coach. I would like to see Lui given a fair shot.

I think that Lui is five eighth material not halfback, weather he can improve as 7 will remain to be seen- Benji couldn't. Another problem I see with the team is a reliable goal kicker ! Go Tigers

Well as Sheens said Lui will be the starting halfback so thats a fact we have to take on board.Im prepared to give the kid a fair go.Maybe we expect too much too soon? The good wraps seem to be on him from all quarters.I will be watching him closely and i hope we dont get too much egg on our faces.Im expecting a good year anyway(excluding injuries).Cogger

Concur with most comments in regards to Lui. He carved them up in U20's last year and was the best player in that comp. Overawed in the top grade, but is still young and will develop into a champ. I feel sorry for Moltzen though. He could play as a specialist fullback or halfback in any other team, but with Lui, Lote, Lazarus, Mullaney and Taumata pushing for a spot at Fullback or Halfback......I fear he will be used as a utility player......good for Wests but maybe disheartening for Moltzen. Too much good young talent to hold on to..........and to keep happy :(

Some people have suggested Lui is a better 6 than 7, similar to the Benji dilemma of last year, but can anyone tell me exactly what the 6 and 7 do differently at the Tigers? They both play a lot of first receiever don't they? They both should be able to call plays, kick and sometimes, but not often, combine. Geez, the 7 hardly even defends at the scrum these days. And can anyone name a half who was great in his first 4 games these past 15-20 years besides perhaps Johns and Langer? Tigers!!!

I'm disappointed Sheensy didnt at least give moltzen a little bit of game time in the halves - especially with benji injured - hope lote is back sooner than expected and they slot him it at fullback - that would be nice to see.

Hi guys, no offence, but you couldn't have watched much U/20's last year, as Lui was far and away the best player in that comp all year and was integral to getting them to the GF. Almost all of Mullaney's tries were on the back of some super creative play from Lui. The last few games of the season when he came back to U/20's from 1st Grade he was carrying an injury which affected his form. He is much leaner this year and is a terrific prospect and dare I say it will prove to be more consistent than the club's marquee player. Please give him a chance - he has a massive future. Though agreed he is a natural 5/8 and not a half back. Does not matter so much these days. Go the Tiges!

Last year Benji was persisted with at half back until is was evident it was not working and then he was able to slot back into his best position, five-eight. Unfortunately, Lui does not have that luxury with Benji around so if he fails at half what does Sheens do then, try him as a lock (must improve defence and work rate first) or give Lui a number of games at half for Wests or Balmain to build his confidence and let him get used to the position. Lui will one day be a fine NRL player the question remains will he make a good halfback, time will tell?

Please Tim give Benji the platform he needs in the form of Moltzen. The team fired when they partnered up last year and they need time to settle in this year.Besides Farah, Moltzen was next best on field against the Sharks. With Lote slated for fullback, for team stability, why not settle the halfback postion now. Lui will be great but needs lots of work in defence right now.

i also like having moltzen at half ..... however in reading the messages below ... yes we won some games but at the end of the day we didnt make the semis so lets try something new ... in an ideal world i would have moltzen at 7 and mullaney at 1 but lets face it ... im fairly sure that tim sheens knows a little more than i do about who is going well .... big year for the tigers

Well done to young Robert Lui and best wishes for a great season. If Sheensy has formed the view that Lui deserves 1st shot at the half back role then that is good enough for me. Come on WESTS TIGERS' fans we are going to need options across 2010 - it will be a long season (injuries, rep duties, semis,) and we need to back the Master Coach's judgement. Plan B at half may be Arana Tuamata, Plan C may be Tim Moltzen once Lote Tuquiri settles in. Go the mighty WESTS TIGERS!

Moltzen for Australian halfback is the funniest thing I have read in years. Lui not nippy enough/always be just a good player? Obviously James West didn't watch any games last year of the under 20's. Thank god he isnt a selector...

Wow. Some of these armchair critics need to get some perspective. I'm guessing most haven't watched Lui in the NYC or at the Sharks game. Get rid of this negativity please!! We need to support the coach and his choices! I think he has made the right one here for sure! Lui is an outstanding player, and those who have made comments that he is slow or not skillful REALLY have no idea.

With Lote starting on wing Sheens has this plan.1.Moltzen.2.Lote,6.Marshall 7.Lui. If things dont go to plan it will change to 1.Lote,7.Moltzen.
Posted by: tcogger, February 28 2010 9:34 PM
Funny how Lui plays his best games at five eighth and not at half. He's obviously not really a halfback.Good luck to him round 1 as the pressure will be on.Lets cross our fingers eh.I cant see Taumata getting in the 17 unfortunatly.Cogger

I think Robert Lui is going to be awesome with a bit more experience in 1st grade, his only 20 and he just needs to work on his defence but I like everything else about him.
Posted by: wests ello, February 28 2010 8:48 PM
If Lui is to play at 7 I will closely monitor his tackle count!
Posted by: TigerBob, February 28 2010 8:10 PM
I disagree with James West as I think that Lui has the potential to become a great player. However I don't beleive that he has the speed off the mark to be a halfback. He will be a great backup for Benji but I believe he could also become a Centre or Back Rower with his size and speed. I do agree with him as far as Moltzen at half is concerned because our team just seams to play so much better with him there. I think we have a couple of good fullbacks in the Club so Moltzen is not needed there. It is important that Sheens gets it right at the start of the season because the comp is so open this year that we can not afford to lose many games early.
Posted by: Daniel, February 28 2010 5:41 PM
How many under 20's games did you see last year James?Obviously not many if you think that about Lui....the kid (and thats what he is)has a big future, he has only played four first grade games and you are ready to write him off!!! He will make you eat your words in years to come!!
Posted by: PETER HUBBLE, February 28 2010 5:12 PM
That was a better performance , I am with most of you about Moltzon at half , I think when Tuqiri comes in he will end up at fullback , so Moltzon will move from fullback to where if Lui is half . Maybe Lui will be half until Tuquiri goes to fullback and then Moltzon goes to half . Sheens is going to try Lui there by the look of it , I dont think Sheens will persist with all this like last year if its not working , he has a lot of options this year unlike 2009 , lets hope so.
Posted by: macatigerdude, February 28 2010 4:55 PM
come on people, give Lui a go. Sheens knows what he is doing. Moltzen as a floating full-back would be good he can come into the attack when ever he feels like he can give lui the first so many games if it doesnt work then move him back to the under 20s
Posted by: Torbizlo, February 28 2010 2:56 PM
I have hear big things about Lui for quite a while however I am yet to see this kid do anything special. his time will come. i did not see the trial vs the sharks, but based on form, how sheens can not name a benji/moltzen half combo is beyond me. we won 6 or 7 on the trot with them there.
Posted by: james west, February 28 2010 10:10 AM
With Moltzen at half, we won 7 games, sheens moved him and we started to lose.is it going to be the same as with Benji? Lui is just not nippy enough, why not groom him for lock? Moltzen could play half for Australia, if given the chance, lui will always be just a good player
Posted by: Steve Thomlinson, February 27 2010 9:58 PM
Sheens is falling back into a deep hole,,last year his selection of Moltzen at fullback and Marshall at half was a disaster and cost us the chance of the semis. Look at how effective the Tigers are with Moltzen at half and Benji at 6. Good luck boys
Posted by: jarrad, February 27 2010 9:15 PM
That was a better preformace and I would be pretty happy with Lui in the 7, and a good combernation with Farah is also good to see. I was pretty disappointed for Ellis to get given a no try, Sorry big guy but you'll get one by running over the top of Anthony Watmough. Go the Tigers.
