One of the biggest names in the world of wrestling was a special guest at Wests Tigers training today.
WWE Superstar ‘The Miz’ tried to show the players just how ‘awesome’ he is when he entered the ‘House of Pain’ gymnasium at Concord Oval to do some weights with the backs.
The Miz’s visit to Wests Tigers was his first official promotion after arriving in Sydney a few hours beforehand. He is in Australia for three days in the lead-up to the biggest World Wrestling Entertainment® event of the year, WrestleMania® XXVI, live and exclusive on Main Event on Monday, March 29.
The Miz is at the top of the WWE ladder, currently boasting three titles including the United States Champion and the Unified WWE Tag Team Champion.
Following his arrival, ‘The Miz’ tried on his Wests Tigers training shirt before watching a highlights DVD of the team in action from 2009. He was stunned to learn the players did not wear helmets or heavy padding like gridiron players.
“I imagine there are plenty of injuries. How can these guys play for 24 weeks. They are tough,’’ The Miz said, shaking his head in disbelief.
It was then time to head into the ‘House of Pain’ and a meeting with winger Beau Ryan, who took it upon himself to shout out a challenge to ‘The Miz’.
With his three championship belts over his shoulder, ‘The Miz’ walked into the gym and yelled out “where and who is this Beau Ryan”.
Ever the comedian, Ryan took of his singlet and headed for ‘The Miz”, trying to keep a straight face. The pair had a light hearted laugh and a jostle for the cameras. ‘The Miz’ then tried his hand at lifting weights with the players.
‘The Miz’ then spoke to the heavy media contingent before posing for photos with the players and signing autographs.
After declaring his devotion to his new rugby league team, Wests Tigers presented ‘The Miz’ with his own jersey. ‘The Miz’ plans to return to Sydney in July/August for the official WWE Smackdown tour where he is again hoping to meet up the team.
“I had an ‘awesome’ experience at Wests Tigers,’’ ‘The Miz’ said.
“When I am in Sydney, I would love to watch them play live.”
It was the second time Wests Tigers have hosted the WWE following a visit to training by Batista and MVP in 2008. Their presence saw Wests Tigers attract international exposure with the club also being shown on the WWE website.
Footnote: The visit by ‘The Miz’ attracted Channel Nine, Seven, Fox Sports, daily and local newspapers. WWE has also indicated it will place a photo of ‘The Miz’ on their website, giving Wests Tigers international exposure once again.
