EXTENDED CONTRACTS FOR YOUNG GUNS
19/11/2009 9:31:00 AM

Wests Tigers has today extended the contracts of three of its most exciting young players in full-back Tim Moltzen, winger Beau Ryan, and centre Blake Ayshford.

All three were off contract at the end of next season but their new deals tie them to the club until the end of the 2012. .

Wests Tigers CEO Stephen Humphreys said the club was thrilled to be able to extend their contracts.

“Tim has gone from the U20s Rookie of the Year in 2008 to an established first grade player,’’ Humphreys said.

“He is a crucial member in Wests Tigers going forward and he has successfully shown he can play full-back or half-back.

“Blake showed plenty of potential when he got his first grade opportunity this season and was rewarded for his efforts by being named the club’s Rookie of the Year.

“Tim and Blake have come through our apprentice system, played in the Toyota Cup, and have now cracked it in first grade.

“Beau has fought his way up from playing Premier League to now being an established first grade player. He has done a really good job for us on the wing. Beau loves the club and we are very happy to have him here.

“The extension of Tim, Blake and Beau comes on top of Wests Tigers securing the likes of captain Robbie Farah, Keith Galloway, Bryce Gibbs and Gareth Ellis among others to long term deals. We feel this gives the squad a good nucleus of players who can make a serious charge at the finals in 2010 and beyond.”

Moltzen, 21, established himself as one of the real rising stars of the Wests Tigers in 2009. Having played 10 first grade games in 2008, Moltzen took his opportunity at full-back early in the season and produced some superb form. He later moved to half-back where he formed a lethal combination with five-eighth Benji Marshall before shifting back to full-back in the final rounds. Moltzen scored 12 tries in 22 games.

“I can’t wait for next season to start. We have recruited very well and the players are looking forward to stepping up in 2010 and making the finals,’’ Moltzen said.

Ayshford, 21, developed into an outstanding young prospect in 2009 after making his first grade debut in round 11 against the Brisbane Broncos at Campbelltown Stadium.

He emerged as a talented player with good footwork, skills and plenty of speed who can cover centre, lock, five-eighth, and wing. Ayshford scored eight tries in 15 matches and will be looking to cement a position in the centres alongside Chris Lawrence in 2010.

“There is so much talent here at Wests Tigers. I’m looking forward to playing in a side that I feel can make a serious challenge for the title in the next few years,’’ Ayshford said.

Ryan, 24, made the right wing his own in 2009, scoring 13 tries in 22 matches. A popular player amongst team-mates and supporters, Ryan will be looking for another big season in 2010 where he will partner Taniela Tuiaki on the wing.

“I am very happy with the new deal. Wests Tigers will enjoy some exciting times in the next few years and it is great to know I will be apart of it,’’ Ryan said.

Taumata lacks the ball skills required for a 5/8 or halback. Sure he can run but we don't need another outside back, we need someone who can direct the forwards and take on the ball playing duites along with Benji. Tim Moltzen is only person at the club who can do this consistently throughout the season and do it well.

Lui is not 1st grade standard as yet.Taumata IS a five eighth. But wont play there. And Fulton and Fitzhenry should have never been signed. But at least we have stronger backups next year.

Cant make everyone happy on here but i have to say Moltzen will be the half. Not too sure about fullback.Wait till trials to see who grabs the 1 jersey.Im also not a big fan of Lote being signed.Doesnt fit our culture.
Posted by: Andrew Watson, December 5 2009 7:40 AM
Unfortunately, Taumata was bought to be 7 and will form a good fit with Benji. He will also defend in tighter and put a few forwards on their bums. With 1 more possible signing announcement to come, Moltzen will be our 14 for probably the next 2 years (if we remain injury free). Tim at 14 is the best fit for the team and his own development for now. My other prodiction is we won't have an 80min Hooker next year, so I'm sure I'll get a few touch-ups over both these comments?!

Tim Moltzen has to play halfback otherwise the side won't be successful. Robert Lui is not a halfback and Arana Taumata isn't a halfback or 5/8. Fulton and Fitzhenry shouldn't be in the side, they've never been consistent and always make avoidable errors. Hopefully Sheens will pick the best side but after the selections of last season im not confident that he will.

All our armchair selectors are submitting interesting team selections for 2010. Some selections are quite obvious, whilst others are somewhat dubious.[ And there is no harm in doing that sort of thing.] For me, it makes a bit more sense to wait until we see how the players perform throughout the trials and even into the early rounds before we all enthusiastically select our best possible side. The playing roster is looking really good with the potential to see a few surprise selections pop up. Roll on 2010.

Great work signing these three, I'd have them in my team. Maybe that left over money can help secure Lote Tuquiri or Greg Bird. Here's my team anyway: 1. L.Tuquiri 2.T Tuiaki 3.B.Ayshford 4.C Lawrence 5.B.Ryan 6.B Marshall 7.T Moltzen 8.J.Cayless 9.R Farah 10.K Galloway 11.G Ellis 12.T Payten 13.C Heighington INT: 14. M.Flanagan 15.J Moors 16.G.Daniella 17.L Fulton 18.J.Mullaney. Obviously if we signed Bird I'd play him at lock and push Payten to the bench in place of Moors.

Could someone please tell supporters why these talented young stars are not resigned beyond 2012, with a reported two more teams entering the comp in 2013, or are we just going to sit by and let our team be plundered by new teams. As what happened in 2007 when the titans started, (Prince & Laffranchi)

Gee David you have some poor selections in your side..Gibbs,Fitzhenry,Daniela?Even Fulton?Lewis has left the club and Moltzen is no fullback...
Posted by: David Stankotic, November 26 2009 7:33 PM
To Mr Sheens,please consider this line up for rd 1.Thank you: 1.T Moltzen 2.T Tuiaki 3.G Daniela 4.C Lawrence 5.D Fitzhenry 6.B Marshall 7.J Lewis 8.B Gibbs 9.R Farah 10.K Galloway 11.G Ellis 12.C Hetghington 13.T Payten INT: 14.J Cayless 15.J Moors 16.A Fifita 17.L Fulton

Can we get TNT signed???? like FAST??? Extend him beyond next year!!!!
Posted by: Jules, November 24 2009 1:43 PM
I agree with the comments on keeping Moltzen at 7 as he and Benji work so well together and the bond they have on and off the field is obvious. GO YOU TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Nick, November 23 2009 8:49 PM
I agree with everyone. I hope tame and anyone else will step up that wing spot by storm. Gus Gould said during the year. That all you need on the wings are top end speed. Thats what we miss with him.

I'm with Leroy, wondering what's happening with Corey Payne. Also wondering what's happening with Rhys Hanbury and David Gower. The Tigers website had lots on Corey's fundraising efforts, but like Danny Galea, there's been absolutely no other mention of Corey and the above players since the season finished. Rumour has it that Rocky Trimachi is also gone.
Posted by: woodmeister, November 23 2009 11:57 AM
Ryan just doesn't cut it for me either.Theres lots missing with this bloke regarding first grade standard.Size and speed for his wing in 2010.Moltzen will be halfback.Hes no fullback thats for sure.Looks like we are going to be superfit in 2010 under Folkes.Might be the difference at the end of games when other teams are tiring.Hopefully no more 2 point losses.
Posted by: tcogger, November 23 2009 11:53 AM
Always good to hear Andrew Watson's comments.Doesn't sugarcoat things like some. He says it like it is and i agree with him 100% most of the time.Ryan just seems to lack something, doesn't he.Seems too small for me and very poor at running the ball back with speed.Very much a Fitzhenry clone.I really liked watching that Joel Jackson in 2009.He is fearsome.Lets get some size and speed on Ryan's wing. Lazarus for full-back for mine.
Posted by: Leroy, November 21 2009 10:53 PM
To Wendy, I live in the Country so the only way I can stay close to my team is here, why then haven't the club made an announcement at least on Corey Payne, it was only a few weeks ago that they had a lot of 'good news' story's on this site about his bike ride for charity, after that nothing,. Come on, tell us our top 25.
Posted by: Bruno, November 21 2009 3:56 PM
Great news all round, not enough said about our CEO. He was a hard working fullback for the mighty tigers and is showing he can really cement our club as force in the future. Smart buying, retaining and weeding has been done now lets play!! Go Tigers!
Posted by: tcogger, November 21 2009 2:49 PM
Wade..You hit the nail right on the head. Gibbs is signed to 2012.Big big mistake that.If he doesn't improve he should be shafted in 2011.Maybe the pressure on him next year will make him put in and get those silly penalties out of his game.He shouldn't be a starting prop anyway.Cogger
Posted by: Andrew Watson, November 21 2009 11:03 AM
All good positive comments but Ryan just doesn't do it for me. Scores a few, but he's a Fullback playing Wing. Too many balls into touch or dropped for my liking, simply because he just doesnt read Benji that well. Junior Roqica and Tame are more than likely to fight for that jumper, leaving Ryan to fight for the number 1 with Moltzen...

Great to secure these players. like others I believe the playing roster is starting to look strong. with many of the under 20's still having another year in that grade in 2010, the future does look good. go you good things. !!!

Im a massive fan of Tim Moltzen :) this is such exciting news all 3 are such great players! It would be good if Tim played in the halves, as him and Benji work so well together. Go the tigers 2010, cant wait :)

Excellent news. Go the Tigers
Posted by: strrretch, November 20 2009 6:38 PM
Sounds great.Impressed by our depth, something we've lacked in recent years. Looking forward to seeing Mullaney and his team-mates kicking on as well. Like everyone else, can't wait for next year. What a ripper!
Posted by: Properossi, November 20 2009 5:37 PM
Great news that we have signed these young blokes and not wasting money (hopefully) on an old bloke like Lote. This is the right move and lets look forward too a great future. Now all we need is to extend the contract of Mr. Sheens and his side kick Royce! Another thing let's sign BENJI for LIFE! He is so important to the strong success of the Tigers partnership with Wests future both on and off the field! Sign Chris Lawrence up too!
Posted by: John, November 20 2009 3:13 PM
If i was tim sheens, i would put Jake Mullaney at full-back, Benji Marshall at five-eighth and Tim Moltzen at halfback.
Posted by: Wendy, November 20 2009 1:39 PM
Leroy,I heard Corey Payne was released. I don't know what happened to Rhys Hanbury.
Posted by: Jules, November 20 2009 12:19 PM
Seriously awesome news...and yes lets get Roycie and Sheensy on the books and there will be no stopping us! What a team. Go Tigers!
Posted by: Jules, November 20 2009 12:17 PM
this is the best news!!!!!!
Posted by: tcogger, November 20 2009 12:05 PM
Moltzen said on Fox Sports he wants to play half back and Iagree its his best spot.We have finally weeded out some rubbish and the roster looks way stronger than ever.I have some others in mind who should go too but i'm not going down that road again.Competition for spots will be interesting.Ryan's is one spot where he will have to improve his ball returning ability and his lack of pace. He is improving but one positive thing is,he knows how to find the tryline.Im more worried about fullback..Cogger
Posted by: wade, November 20 2009 11:07 AM
Gibbs to a long term deal, they mucked that up last time and signed him for too long after 2005. He has gone backwards.
Posted by: Bob N, November 20 2009 9:53 AM
Another show of confidence in Tim Sheens and the coaching staff. Humphreys should be making sure that Tim Sheens and the current coaching staff are locked in as well. Correct me if I'm wrong but Tim's contract is up at the end of 2010 ?
Posted by: baz pooley, November 20 2009 9:25 AM
I share Andrew W's concerns that Tim Moltzen will become 'that utility player'. He needs to own a specialist position in my view, more than likely at half back alongside Benji. And how pleasing to see a few more of our talented youngsters being signed to long term contracts. Wests Tigers are most definitely heading in the right direction with a playing roster that should give us all confidence in looking forward to a successful 2010.
Posted by: Wendy, November 20 2009 9:15 AM
Good to see the 3 of them are staying, i hope Beau Ryan improves a little, I'm sure he will. Now all we need to do is extend the contracts of Tim Sheens and Royce Simmons and the future is looking real good.
Posted by: David, November 19 2009 10:48 PM
Awesome news. The next few years are going to be HUGE for the mighty Tigers. There's no doubt in my mind whatsoever. Go get em boys. Bring that trophy back where it belongs.
Posted by: cunno, November 19 2009 9:05 PM
This is great news, all 3 are good players and will only get better with more experience. I hope Moltzen is played at half, his combination with Benji worked well this year.
Posted by: marsfield tiger, November 19 2009 7:48 PM
Congratulations to all concerned, the CEO and staff and to the boys who were happy to extend their contracts before they expired. Like most Tiger supporters, they know another grand final appearance is not too far away.
Posted by: spearby, November 19 2009 7:40 PM
well done. It is great to get these young players under extended contracts as they are all top up and comers. Thanks Stephen Humphreys. Lets all hope for a year with few injuries and we might give the premiership a shake. Good luck and up the tigers . merry xmas to all the tigers players and supporters

Great stuff but whats happening with Corey Payne and Rhys Hanbury, are they still part of our plans, still disappointed to lose Danny Galea and Daine Laurie,
Posted by: Mark K, November 19 2009 6:39 PM
Great news, all 3 guys are outstanding and have alot more to show. Well done to the players, so happy for them.

I can't wait for next year. It looks like we are going to have a great year. Go get them TIGERS!
Posted by: alex, November 19 2009 4:20 PM
Well done boys. 2010 wests tigers grand finals and premer ship we have the best players in the world. I can't wait to see Benji, Robbie, Tim, Arana, Taniela, Tame, and Ayshford play again. Go Tigers.
Posted by: Andrew Watson, November 19 2009 4:15 PM
This is very promising. I'm a big fan of Moltzen and Ayshford. Ayshford will go on to play lock or centre for Australia one day, but I do fear for Tim becoming 'that' utility player who is too talented and continually covers a range of positions. Either way, this is great news to see these young boys mixing it with the new and old experience the Tigers have for 2010.
Posted by: craig, November 19 2009 1:55 PM
Hi Tutty, i am hoping Tim Sheens plays Arana Taumata off the bench as our new utilty player to replace John Morris because I hear he can play half, five-eighth, and full-back. I have played against him in touch footy. He has a really good step. I hope Sheens plays Mark Flanagan at lock as I hear plenty of good reports on him.
Posted by: Deebo, November 19 2009 1:18 PM
This is great news, as I believe each of these guys have their best football ahead of them.
Posted by: carol, November 19 2009 1:06 PM
Well done boys, its great to know you will be a Tiger for the next 3 years.GO THE TIGERS IN 2010.
Posted by: Mark 03, November 19 2009 1:04 PM
Absolutely awesome news.

Great to see the Tigers securing some of our best young talent long term, before the vultures with no junior development can poach them. Well done Stephen Humphreys and Co, on the best off season work done in years!
Posted by: Mathewmatics, November 19 2009 12:40 PM
All three are great talents and it is great work to secure them to extended contracts. Once again we find ourselves with some of the very best young talent in the Tigers, and some much needed depth...lets hope we can succeed like last time we found ourselves in this position. Go TIGERS!!!
Posted by: coralie, November 19 2009 12:07 PM
Congrats, guys for your contract extensions. Have a great season. What about Taniela ! I hope he comes back well from his injuries. Good work guys ! Go Tigers
Posted by: seahunt, November 19 2009 11:55 AM
New CEO Stephen Humphreys is doing a great job, securing these young and talented players well into the future. I have a feeling that another N.R.L.Premiership for the Tigers is not to far away.
Posted by: tutty, November 19 2009 11:55 AM
Yes, it's great to see these guys wanting to play with the Tigers and I wish them all the best over the next few years. And Craig I too would like to see Tim Moltzen and Benji in the halves but I'm also open to the possibility that guys like Arana Tuamata and Robert Lui might get a chance at some stage. As usual injuries, form, the opposition, confidence, rep duty etc will have a bearing who is selected by the coach and his staff. Tigers!!!
Posted by: Michael A, November 19 2009 11:18 AM
We forgot to mention Benji as well !!!!
Posted by: Dave, November 19 2009 11:13 AM
