FROM SHANGHAI WITH LOVE FOR TIGER YEE
Wednesday, 25 November 2009

Fanatical Wests Tigers supporter Andrew Yee has ‘Stepped Up’ to become a 2010 Member - and he has done it all the way from Shanghai, China.

In a show of loyalty and passion for his beloved club, Andrew has secured a Stripes Membership which gives him a non-ticketed membership with all Wests Tigers Benefits.

Wests Tigers spoke to Andrew this week to ask him about his love for the team and why he is hoping 2010 really is ‘The Year of the Tiger’ according to the Chinese.

WT:How did your passion for the Tigers begin. What are you early childhood memories?
AY: It started in 1998 in the school playground with footy cards and mini footballs. I remember a school mate asking me which team I supported and I told him Balmain Tigers. The rest is history. I remember watching the 1988 and 1989 Grand Finals and crying and yelling at my mum. She wanted Canberra to score.

WT: Who are your favourite Tigers players, past and present, and why?.
AY: My all time favourite Balmain players were Tim Brasher, Benny Elias, Paul Sironen, Steve Edmed. When the Wests Tigers first started, my favourites were John Skandalis and Matty Sears. In recent times, I like Benji (is God), Robbie Farah, Brett Hodgson, Chris Lawrence and Tim Moltzen.

WT: What are your best Wests Tigers moments? How did you celebrate the 2005 premiership win?
AY: I will always remember the 2005 premiership win and the games we won along the way. I loved being at the preliminary final against the Dragons. We were the underdogs and we won comfortably, that night gave me tingles!
When we beat the Cowboys to win the premiership, I celebrated with a quick phone call to a mate in Townsville. I then went into Balmain with a few friends and celebrated the night away with the rest of the Tigers supporters running around the streets!

WT: How often do you click on the WT website to get your Wests Tigers fix of news, match reports and WTV?
AY: Truthfully, probably about three times a week. The WTV segments take a while to stream in Shanghai, China. Sometimes i wish I had an Australia network here but you only get Friday’s games on delay with some games on Saturday. It is very expensive to get.

WT: Do family or friends send you copies of the games to China. Do you wear your WT gear around the streets of China?
AY: No, unfortunately not. I use a website p2p, again it is not exactly a great stream, but you take what you can get. I do wear the gear, generally in the mid seasons, however, it is winter now and it is way too cold for the Tigers jersey. Come season 2010, I will get it out with pride; i have high hopes for 2010!

WT: Why is important to you to become a Wests Tigers Member?
AY: I like to think I’m doing my bit for my team, especially with the AFL coming in so aggressively. Rugby League is so much better to watch for the contact, the excitement and the all-round game. I have grown up watching league and want my kids (when I have some) to do the same. For me, a Wests Tigers Membership means I am a real fan. I can’t go to the games or even regularly watch them, but Ii am always shouting at the computer (to the shock of my girlfriend). I love the Tigers and feel they are a big part of my life. I would recommend any Wests Tigers fan to invest a small amount of money in this great club and to watch the success of two proud foundation clubs come to fruition.

Wow that's a real tiger from Shangai. I live in Papua New Guinea and have been a Balmain Tigers supporter since 1988 and when names like Sironen, Roach, Elias and the rest are mentioned, Memories of 1988 and 1989 and in particular that field goal attempt by Benny Elias (one of my favaorite players) that hit the cross bar against Canberra always come to mind. All that was finally erased in 2005. Thanks to Timmy Sheens and the boys. Our 2010 NRL campaign looks bright with all the new recruits and Fans like Andrew. Go the TIGERRRS!

I love hearing stories like Andrew's. I hope he sees many great games in 2010. I've been a magpie fan since 1978 & I've just renewed my membership. I saw every game WTs played this year. A good excuse to spend a week in NZ which is lovely. I don't know if I will be able to do it again next year but I think Robbie & the boys are up for a good year & I plan to be at as many games as I can, home or away, to support them. Hope the fans all turn out to do likewise.

That's how far a Tigers fan will go! Well done Andrew. i also have a family background from Shanghai but I have lived in Australia all my life. i have been a Tigers suporter since 2006 and every year, i have protested to my parents about getting me a membership (still in the pocess). WIth 2010 being my HSC year, the membership doesn't look so successful, but just like Andrew, I wore my Tigers jersey as often as I could when I went back to China this year. Go the mighty Tigers! We support the best team, from all around the world. I will get that membership one day =]

Being a big Tigers fan from NZ (since 1988), I can totally relate to this article. It's costly getting to Aussie for games, even from NZ (I've only been to a handful in my lifetime) but I always aim to make the effort to support the boys in Auckland (when playing away to the Warriors). As much as liked attending those infamous Christchurch home games between 2004-2006, it was a bit of a disadvantage for the club, losing a real home game. Personally those so called 'NZ' Warriors should be taking more NRL games to other parts of NZ. My ultimate dream would to be able to see the Tigers play a game at the caketin (Westpac Stadium) here in Wellington.Anyways, good on you Andrew. Good to see you getting behind the club you love. I shall be doing the same from NZ and purchasing my membership soon! UP THE MIGHTY TIGERS 2010!!

Andrew, you're and inspiration to all Wests Tigers fans to help the club and become 2010 members and beyond. Well done to you, sir.

Well done Andrew, your support is fantastic. As many supporters as possible should become members using whatever type of membership suits their situation. If you want to see the games next year (delayed) contact me through this site, I don't think the club will mind passing my email address to you to discuss what can be done.

Good on you Andrew, welcome again to the Wests Tigers Team. Great to hear you mention some of the Tiger Old Boys. 89 will always go down as the one that should of been. My mates still bring it up on the Golf Course as I'm about to chip on to the green. Look forward to your thoughts throughout the year, cheers...

Make Andrew the Tigers' Chinese marketing manager I say. If he could get the other one billion or so Chinese on board, then there'd be no stoppin' us. For a PR excercise, get the team to walk the Great Wall of China too. Folkesy could have them do all sorts of excercises along the way. Ahhh, the mind boggles eh. Anyway, good onya Andrew. Tigers!!!
