PAYTEN KEEPS ON GOING
18/01/2010 5:06:46 PM

There was no birthday cake in sight today for Todd Payten, just a hard session in the gym.

The highly respected front-rower was put through a tough pads, bike and rowing session. He may be 31 but Payten is the Wests Tigers 'Duracell' bunny - he keeps going and going.

The 226 game veteran feels as fresh as a daisy as he prepares for his 15th season in the NRL. The reason behind this - fatherhood and the impact of new High Performance Manager Steve Folkes.

“Each session under Folkesy is like a cardio workout in itself whereas previously, we used to try and lift big weights, do recovery, and then try to lift big weights again,’’ Payten said.

“Pre-season training before Christmas was hard but it was enjoyable. Everyone has been having a dig and working hard as a group which we need to do at this time of the year. The young guys earn respect off the older guys and you learn plenty about one another.”

One player Payten didn’t need to learn too much about was new prop Jason Cayless. The pair spent a year together at the Sydney Roosters before Cayless applied his trade in the English Super League.

“Jason was the best prop in the world before he went to England. He will be a big attribute for us,’’ Payten said.

“I expect him to be quite solid up the middle. He is aggressive, hits the ball up strong, and has a little bit of an offload in the line and before the line. He is a real professional.”

Cayless’ arrival at Camp Concord sees him fighting Payten, Keith Galloway, Bryce Gibbs, Junior Moors and Alan Schirnack for the two starting front-row spots. Snapping at their heels are young guns Andrew Fifita and Aaron Woods, two of the success stories from the Wests Tigers U20s team in 2009.

Payten is adamant he still is a front-rower despite coach Tim Sheens moving him to the second-row and lock at different stages last season.

“I still played the same role, just wore a few different numbers,’’ he said.

“I had about 40 or 50 minutes last year where I played out wider which is something I wasn’t completely used to. It made me think about my football a little bit more.

“Keith has been going great for the past two years. He works hard, lifts big weights in the gym and is pretty good on his feet. There is no reason why he can’t play State of Origin this year.

“Andrew Fifita has plenty of ability. He has a bit of work to do in the gym but that’s part and parcel for a young prop. Aaron Woods is the same. He is a big kid who still has to grow into his body.

“We expect too much too soon from not only young players but players in a lot of positions. Being a forward, it is hard for an 18 or 19-year-old to compete week in, week out over 26 weeks against physically grown men.”

As for an individual goal, Payten wants to increase his work-rate after averaging 78 metres per game last season.

“I’ve always had that stigma of being a half-back in a front-rowers body. To get over that 100 metres per game average, that is the hallmark of a solid front-rower. If I can get that up and still have variety around the ruck, then that should be good for the side,’’ he added.

Payten nominated half-back Robert Lui as the player who had impressed him the most at pre-season training.

Robert Lui is our best option at half-back. He is big, strong, quick, and reads the game well,’’ Payten said.

“It would have been daunting for him to come into the side late last season and order us around but he needs to do that. To do this over 26 rounds this year will be a big ask. Robert is the most threatening half-back in our club.”

Payten feels the team needs to improve its mental capacity if it is to ‘step up’ and make the finals for the first time since 2005.

“We need to be able to concentrate better for longer periods. We have got all the skill and ability,’’ Payten said.

“I don’t think we were fit enough mentally last year. We stood up in those tough games but we often let ourselves down with a drop ball or through a poor read in defence.

“The work we are doing in the gym, the intensity of training, and the consistency of our sessions shows we are ahead of where we were this time last year.”

As for that birthday cake, Payten might enjoy one with his long term partner Julie and their nine-month-old son, Noah.

“I’m really enjoying fatherhood. I would love more kids but I need to get married first,’’ Payten smiled.

“That will happen around October or November.”

Hopefully a finals appearance will beckon before then.

Toddy .Your a great bloke and more importantly an important link in our team. You are a smart prop .An Artie Beetson style player. Its just a shame they didn't pick you for Origin because you'd be the type that would do that little unexpected thing to turn the game...Go Payto the Fam Luvs Ya.

Last thing Toddy needs is a birthday cake..lol...I agree with others here that Moltzen should be our half..I dont like Todd's talk about Lui starting there at all.

I will watch closely the early form of Gibbs,Payten and Heighington in 2010.With more depth and the new guns ready to take their chances these 3 need to do better than in 2009.A failure year for these 3 and the axe will fall on them.We supporters should be doing the culling and recruiting.lol

I think that at least for the early part of the season Robert Lui would be best suited as an attacking reserve back who would be brought into play as the oppostion tires.

If Todd can lead the team around the field, then the team will follow.

Comments re Lui were surprising given what I saw of him late last season but hopefully he has picked up his pace and particularly his defence in the off season. As everyone has already stated at least there is depth in the club this year. Given Todd's comments it will be interesting to see who gets the start at half back for round 1 against Manly. Go TIGERS!!

Happy Birthday Todd! you have always been a hard worker and this is why you are still getting a run , you have gone form strength to strength since you arrived from the Roosters and are still going strong so congratulations on all you have achieved with the Tigers , im sure we haven't seen the last of you yet, keep up the good work big fella. And as for Robert Lui, yes he is quick on his feet and has a good pair of hands but he want to learn how to tackle real quick otherwise he needs to be replaced if we are going to be a force this season - if i had my choice Moltzen would be my prefered half back....by far.

Tigers..I love the club. Will be at every home match this season, and as many away macthes as possible. All the way in 2010. Todd, you are a legend of the club and the game.

Spot on Fuzzie's comment about depth. Depth brings success and success contributes to depth. A consistent top 6 club is likely to retain more of its developing players who naturally want to be part of a successful club. A good season with the roster we have this year could really set us up. There is a lot of momentum at Tigers and has been since '05 - all that's been missing is the results (and a drop of luck). tigers!!!

I think you will find there won't be many changes from 2009 in the first game.Worries me when i hear Payten say Lui is big, strong and fast.He has to be joking right?I'd say overweight, lazy in defence and slow. As for Toddy.Time for you to run HARD son instead of dawdling up to the the defence line.Well past his use by date unfortunately in my book. But i do sense a good 2010 with a more stronger backups roster than 2009.Cogger

Happy Birthday Todd, Rip and Tear in 2010, you've got some back up this year and just like you, Big Red is another year older, enjoy the rest of your day and rip into training again tomorrow, we need a big year.

I'm very suprised that Todd Payten mentioned Lui as halfback. From what I've heard a few weeks back, Arana Taumata was being picked as the best half. Lui is a very good player but was very quiet in the 3 games he played for the tigers so come round 1, I hope he is ready to go cause we have Manly first match,

Interesting team sheet for this season but who is going to be in the line up? At least we don't have to worry about injuries like 06 and 07 with this depth but you get the feeling if people don't get the game time we will lose them after this season. Just a thought

Good on ya Baz Pooley. Yep, I can almost smell the liniment in the air. No, no wait a minute, it's the aftershave I brought back from our holiday to Laos. Hmmm, all I need now is a deodorant that smells of freshly cut lawn and I'll be in footy season dreamland. Tigers!!!

Nice to see that there's depth and if injuries are an issue, there's plenty of options to be considered...exciting and impressive,.March can't come quick enough. Watch out, this is 'The year of the Tiger'.

Todd is a good worker. Im glad he is still a major part of this team to help guide the younger boys around the park. I'm glad he mentioned Lui and gave him the wrap. Robert is an exceptional talent and IS the best attacking half at the club. With a solid start to the 2010 year and a few months in NSW Cup, Robert's defence will hopefully improve to help us in the back end of the year. G Allen, as a Qlder, I hope they pick Todd for Origin also...

I concur with Tutty's comments completely. Especially about guys like Simon Dwyer, Woods, Fifitta etc who have a great opportunity to impress the powers that be, in the trials and on the training paddock. Always enjoy reading Tutty's contributions and this one is no exception.

OMG its looking good Arana and Benji in charge. Big forwards, fast outside backs and perhaps Lote. No excuses now. Go you good things.

Todd is a vital part of this team. I have always noticed the team lift a little when he is out on the paddock. I will bet my house this year will be his best. Maybe he too will get an Origin call up. Go Toddy.

Good on you Todd, I think you are a wonderful player when you are out there the tiger pack very rarely loses ground to any pack and to be fitter and still keen as a 21 year old it does not get any better than that, go well big fella..
Posted by: Nathan, January 18 2010 6:33 PM
Interesting he dropped Lui's Name..I got no idea what the team is going to be??
Posted by: tutty, January 18 2010 6:22 PM
I've always thought of Todd as being a player who needs several games to reach his best, a fitness thing I suppose. But a different training regime might see him start the season better. I hope that's the case because the draw is pretty tough and I think guys like Cayless, Flanagan, Tupou, Taumata will probably take a month or two to show their best. And Tuqiri, if he comes, will miss the first month. So if that's the way it turns out then guys like Alan Shirnack, Simon Dwyer and Junior Moors need to make the most of any early opportunities that come their way. Tigers!!!
