YOUNG GUNS RECEIVE HIGH PRAISE
22/01/2010 4:43:18 PM

Four of the biggest names at Wests Tigers have chosen their players to watch in the countdown to the NRL season kick-off.

Hooker and captain Robbie Farah, Kiwi Test captain Benji Marshall, England second-rower Gareth Ellis, and former Kiwi Test prop Jason Cayless were asked to nominate which players had impressed them in pre-season training.

Only Farah and Cayless chose the same player in half-back Robert Lui.

Marshall nominated full-back/half-back Tim Moltzen and centre Blake Ayshford while Ellis chose rising lock Matt Hyland.

Lui, Moltzen, Ayshford and Hyland are products of the Wests Tigers U20s team which further highlights the pathway to the NRL through the Toyota Cup competition.

Back in training after representing Australia on the Four Nations tournament, Farah predicted a big year for Lui, who broke into the first grade team in round 23 last year.

“Rob has the skill and the speed. It would have been hard for him to come into the team at half-back for those three games with Benji and I there,’’ Farah said.

“He is feeling more comfortable now, is starting to talk more, and is taking the line on at training. Rob is just one of those kids who you can see has the talent to be anything in the game. He can be super for us this year.”

A former premiership winning prop with the Sydney Roosters, Cayless encouraged Lui to talk more.

Robert Lui is a talented young kid who is strong, very quick and has a good head on him. He has been training pretty hard so it could be a big year for him,’’ Cayless said.

“Being a half-back, you have got to be able to tell blokes what to do. For shy guys like Robert, it does come with age. I was quiet shy when I first started playing but I didn’t have to tell people what to do.

“When you are a shy person, your voice comes as you get more seniority but being a half-back, you can’t afford to do that. Rob has got to do it now.

“It is not as though Rob is going to have to call all of the plays with Benji and Robbie Farah there but he still needs to find his voice.”

Two of the success stories for the Wests Tigers in the NRL last season was the emergence of Moltzen and Ayshford. Marshall feels there is no reason why both can’t step up to another level in 2010.

“Moltz has been killing it. He has come leaps and bounds on last year. He killed it last year but just to see his progress from when I went away for the Four Nations to coming back for the start of this pre-season, is incredible.

“I mean just his attitude and the attitude he shows out on the field, I think he is in for a big year. I have said it before but I feel Moltz is a future Origin and rep player.

“Blake got to play 15 games last year after coming into the team as a bit of an unknown where as now, he has sort of taken on a role as a leader.

“He has been training the house down in the gym. Out on the field, he has been training harder than I have seen him train and he is looking better than he has ever looked. He is also talking more.

“If there are two players who I think are up for a big year, it is those two.”

Ellis, the world’s best second-rower, has paid Hyland a huge compliment. Hyland is enjoying his first pre-season summer in the full-time squad. The 19-year-old can still play in the U20s this season.

“He sort of reminds me of myself when I was his age, just a hard working player. He is probably a little bit ahead of me where I was at 19’’ Ellis said.

“Matt has got a big future ahead of him. He has the skills and is the type of bloke you can tell everyone wants to play alongside.

“He would never let anyone down. Hopefully I will get my chance of playing alongside him.

“Matt has the same work ethic as Chris Heighington - that never say die attitude who keeps turning up for the team.

“When I watched the U20s last year, Matt was the one who stood out for me. His attitude impressed me. Attitude goes along way when you are his age.”

Ellis said he was impressed by Hyland’s high work rate in defence in which he averaged more than 40 tackles a game last year.

“Matt has a good engine and that is one of the big things you need when you want to play NRL,’’ Ellis said.

“He needs to keep working hard in the gym. My advice to him would be to carry on the way he is, keep his head down, and work really hard, and don’t fall to any outside temptations.

“Matt can’t let that get ahead of him because he could have a good 10 to 15 year career in the NRL. If he gets his chance in first grade this season, I am sure he will take it with both hands.”

Yes Baz ,i remember Pratten Park too.My father and i use to walk the 15 mins to the ground on Saturdays..Entry fee was 5 cents or sixpence in those days.If you got there after the game started it was free entry from the back gate.A full crowd was 5000.Noel Kelly,Ken Bray,Don Parish etc.Great memories for me.Cogger

Don't be fooled by the results when we had Moltzen and Gallant running around last year. Opposition defences didn't have any interest in them and stuck by their game plan to shut down Robbie and Benji. Plenty of coaches will have Moltzen in their defensive plans this year. Moltzen's EFFORT was the real shining light in 09, which told us all he is a star in the making...

There is a massive selection headache. When Sheensy had Moltz in Half and Gallant in fullback last year, we had a 100% win record. Surely that has to tell Sheens to keep Moltzen in the half. But with Lui coming through, does Moltz get moved to half to make way for him? With Arana off the bench? Throw Lazarus and Brown into the mix and there are a few selection headaches for Sheensy! Bring on 2010!!!!!

Payten and Gibbs class?Pratten Park you are joking right? They would be 2 players i'd be shafting if they dont put in more effort in 2010. But i do agree with Andrew Watson. We DONT have a class fullback and that could hurt us.

Pratten Park. I love your optimism and I think we all share your sentiments. I haven't felt so excited and confident about the coming season for many a year. Incidentally, your pen name reminds me of very fond memories of Pratten park, Ashfield and Saturday afternoon footy. Real club rugby league and an atmos similar to Leichhardt today. But its 2010 and a BIG year awaits us.!!!

Big year for the mighty Tigers. I can see a few players really making a name for them selves in the top grade this year. Does any one know if Mullaney from the 20's is still at the club? Was outstanding for us last year and have not heard any talk about him for the 2010 season. Go the Tigers!

I too am excited about our prospects this year and the further development of some of the young guns, Jake Mullaney in particular. Are we getting Tuquiri? The lack of feedback is disappointing!

Nice touch Pratten Park. We have 100% record in the finals. Good to hear the young boys putting in. This is their time to gain must need experience on and off the field. As to who starts, one thing is for sure, you need a world-class Fullback to win this comp. If we dont get Lote, we need to keep that money for another world-class fullback as Moltzen, Lazarus and Ryan way off the pace and need another 2-3 years development!

Stay over there Lote you seem to be getting a bit too carried with yourself and how much you think your worth, give me our rising U20'S stars anyday.
Posted by: Pratten Park, January 25 2010 12:41 PM
I say bring on the start of the season or better still just fast-forward us through to the semi finals (history says if the WESTS TIGERS make the semis, then we win the comp). These young players are so talented and when you combine them with the experience and class of Farah, Benji, Ellis, Payten, Tuiaki, Galloway, Gibbs, Lawrence, etc - BRING IT ON!

It was interesting to note that Tim Sheens said on Fox that the team only needs a little improvement and that one of the areas needing improvement was kicking. I agree, the team's kicking in general play, especially in attacking zones has been lacking in the past few years. Benji and Robbie have their moments but since Prince left their's been a hole. Robert Lui might be more productive in that area than Tim Moltzen. In fact Tim Moltzen might benefit more from having another creative half in the side. There's more options for Tim Sheens anyway. Tigers!!!

Well said Tutty and Mark03. The big issue for me is that the young guns have to be prepared to work really hard and play as though their lives [and careers] depended on it if they're going to have any chance of displacing the more experienced players the club bought during the off season. Ayshford and Moltzen are proof of that. Nor must they be discouraged if they can't immediately crack a position in the NRL squad. Nothing would please me more than to see some of our outstanding U20's get a run in the top side.A big year awaits the WestsTigers. Good luck to all players. And to the coaching staff as well. baz

Does anyone know who is left from our Toyota Cup side from last year apart from the players that have been signed with the Weststigers 1st grade squad for 2010.
Posted by: Wendy, January 24 2010 6:17 PM
Yes the 'Summer time Rugby League show' lastnight on TV was unreal. Foxtel wanna hope they never get rid of their FOX Sports channels and the live Weststigers games as its the only reason i have Foxtel connected.Im keen to find out where Tim Sheens will play young Tim Moltzen also Mark03.

There is an air of excitment and expectancy for 2010. I see a lot of good things around the Tigers this year. First there are so many good young players coming up from the juniors that in its own is a great thing. Secondly there are some players for the Tigers that I believe its their year to shine and make there mark in the NRL. Thirdly we have bought well in the off season which covers our depth in times of injuries. But what I think will be the biggest impact to the club is having Tim coach an Australian team overseas. It will make a great coach that much better and having Folkes there, Well I am going to say to fans, here is the 2010 NRL Premiership team. Lets play our part and support them.

If we don't get Lote would we have a go for Matao ?? or secure some of our young talent to extended contracts ?
Posted by: griff, January 24 2010 12:29 AM
throw in simon dwyer, al shirnack, woods and fifita, future looks good
Posted by: Dean, January 23 2010 10:43 PM
Why do we need Lote Tuquri when we have talent like this coming through our ranks already to go, Lote is a waste of money and we should use that money to help these new talented players come through. GO TIGERS IN 2010
Posted by: nathan, January 23 2010 4:24 PM
a strong team i would like to see tim moltzen at halfback and robert lui on the bench, a great looking team
Posted by: mat, January 23 2010 3:55 PM
Can' wait for the season to start. I noticed on the show that Seens mentioned Lote but I keep reading he is trying to bump up his price with Leicester. I say let him stay over there i'm happy with our options with both mullaney who also kicks goals, lazarus and moltzen all more than capable of handling the fullback job. This is the most i've looked forward to a season in a long time. Bring on the Eagles on March 15.
Posted by: tcogger, January 23 2010 11:44 AM
Well,Lui must have something I can't see in him.Jury is out for me so far.Hyland eh,Gareth would be a good judge although i've never seen him play.Seems like an abundance of talent this year. For mine the man will be Ayshford..A big tip from Cogger.See how accurate Cogs will be...Cogger

This just shows 2010 is going to be MASSIVE for the Tigers. We have SO much talent in the squad and coming through. It also shows Folkesy has been such a positive influence to the boys and HOLY CRAP I CANT WAIT FOR THE SEASON TO START
Posted by: Mark03, January 23 2010 8:40 AM
I could not agree more with all the comments by the boys, although it will be interesting to see where they play Timmy Moltzen this year, I thought he killed it at half back, but he was also solid at fullback. Then you have Robert Lui and Arana Taumata? Great headache to have I reckon. How is young Blake Lazarus going, I hope he is getting back to full fitness, the kid deserves it. I loved the summertime show last night, it has wet the appetite for a GREAT season. 2010 year of the Tiger!!!!!

Under a salary cap those teams who can develop a sound youth system, one that sees perhaps 2 or 3 quality players come through every couple of years will have an advantage over those who cannot. But the trick is to do it on a continual basis just as Brisbane and Melbourne seem to do although they also have advantages most other teams don't e.g. one city teams and News Limited. Anyway if a couple of guys from last year's Toyota Cup squad can progress and add quality to the NRL team it would give a huge boost to the campaign and it hopefully be repeated next year. Tigers!!!
