WESTS TIGERS BEAT SHARKS 24-22 IN NRL
31/07/2010 9:29:05 PM

Wests Tigers recorded a hard fought 24-22 victory over a gallant Cronulla Sutherland Sharks at Leichhardt Oval tonight in round 21 of the Telstra Premiership.

In front of a crowd of 14, 942, the Wests Tigers had to dig real deep to hold off a never say die Sharks outfit to take the two points to move to 28 points on the Telstra Premiership ladder.

Wests Tigers started the game in fine style when the ball was spread left through five-eighth Benji Marshall which saw winger Beau Ryan make a good 35 metre run with his first touch.

The Sharks were denied a try in the seventh minute to winger Blake Ferguson after referee Jason Robinson ruled a forward pass much to the delight of the Wests Tigers supporters on a very packed hill.

Former Wests Tigers centre Dean Collis opened the scoring when he beat opposite centre Chris Lawrence to score in the corner. Half-back Scott Porter failed to convert the try for a 4-0 lead.

Referee Brett Suttor called on video referee Phil Cooley in the 17th minute to see whether full-back Mitch Brown had scored out wide in a three man tackle against his former club. The try was denied.

Wests Tigers opened their account two minutes later through Brown after a grubber kick by hooker Robbie Farah from dummy half. Brown is having a superb game against his former club after being a late call up through the injury to Wade McKinnon.

Marshall converted the try from next to the posts to give Wests Tigers a 6-4 lead.

The Sharks were denied a try again to Ferguson when the winger put his foot on the sideline in trying to score in the 21st minute.

Wests Tigers extended their lead in the 24th minute when second-rower Liam Fulton proved too strong in a 10 metre run to score out wide for a 10-4 lead. Marshall, from 10 metres in and 22 metres out, failed to convert the try.

Cooley was again called on in the 30th minute to rule whether Ferguson had grounded the ball after a crossfield bomb by Trent Barrett was spilt by winger Lote Tuqiri. The try was awarded for a 10-8 scoreline.Porter converted the try for a 10-10 scoreline.

The video referee was called on in the 35th minute to rule whether Lawrence had scored in the corner or gone into touch in a tackle by Ferguson. It came back as Refs Call with referee Jason Robinson ruling he went into touch.

A beautiful pass by Marshall put Lawrence into a gap to race 40 metres inside the final five seconds of the first half to score in the corner for a 14-10 lead at half-time. Marshall failed to convert the try.

2nd Half

Wests Tigers started the second half in the same way they finished the first half with a try in the 42nd minute to Fulton, his second for the game. Lawrence took over the goal-kicking duties and converted from in front of the posts for a 20-10 lead.

Cooley was called on in the 52nd minute to rule whether Ferguson scored his second try off a crossfield kick by Barrett. Replays showed Tuqiri saved a try when he took Ferguson into touch before planting the ball down in the corner. It was ruled no try.

The Sharks were awarded a second try to Collis in the 55th minute when referee Brett Suttor ruled Paul Gallen did not touch the ball in trying to defuse a Barrett bomb in-goal. The ball deflected rolled behind the posts for Collis to score. Suttor awarded the try on the spot without referring it to the video referee, much to the anger of the Wests Tigers crowd.

Porter converted the try to leave the Sharks trailing 20-16.
Wests Tigers stretched their lead in the 65th minute when Marshall delivered a superb cut out pass to Tuqiri to dive over out wide for a 24-16 scoreline. Lawrence failed to convert his own try.

The Sharks got back to 24-20 when Tuqiri spilt a crossfield kick by Barrett for full-back Nathan Gardner to score behind the posts. Porter converted the try for a 24-22 scoreline after 71 minutes.

Cronulla went into Wests Tigers half through a penalty in the 72nd minute after former Wests Tigers utility John Morris dived on a play the ball by Chris Heighington when Farah was not looking.

The Sharks got inside the Wests Tigers 10 metres before centre Ben Pomeroy was penalised in planting the ball down after being called held by Robinson.

Wests Tigers looked set to score when a grubber kick by Marshall in the 77th minute was spilt by winger Luke Covell only for centre Blake Ayshford to knock it on in trying to pick up the loose ball before the line to score.

A grubber kick by Farah in the 78th minute gave Wests Tigers a repeat set despite having men on his outside. A knock on in the next set saw the Sharks have one last chance inside the final minute from their quarter line.

Tuqiri defused his most important kick of the night inside from Barrett inside the final 20 seconds to give Wests Tigers a two point victory.

Wests Tigers tackle Souths next Saturday night at ANZ Stadium.

Winning ugly, winning great its 2 points either way.The problem is though,we CANNOT beat the good sides.Manly,Dragons and Souths have all picked our bones. We dont have any improvement as we are a team that will always make lots of errors be it penalties, missed tackles etc.

My heart goes out to Benji, he tries hard. He certainly has mistakes in him, and doesn't seem to weather the storms well as of late, but he is brilliant to watch when he is on song. I don't know what's happened to his goal kicking, but it was never this bad before. Maybe his confidence is shot, but Benj, if you are reading this mate...RELAX, breathe, take the time to line them up and if you miss, don't give up. Black and gold never fold!

You guys are harder to please than my wife!Ugly this, ugly that, need this need that. After 4 baron years we are winning games that would of been lost.Geeze Im impressed with Fulton the year in the old dart has been a revelation for him.His angled runs into space are a joy to watch, not to mention his tireless defence.Majority of teams in the top 8 didnt really fire on the weekend.Bring home the bacon against the Bunnies and it sets us up for a tough run home.Im quietly confident, wear the black n white hoops for this one.............

Hope you read this Benji. You are talented all round footballer who can kick goals.I've been to many games where he slotted them from the sideline. He has lost some confidence of late and feel he is rushing. Benji needs to take some time, get the concentration going and he will turn it around in tome for the semis. Goodluck tigers-goodluck Benji.

I dont agree that it is good to win ugly. 1 or 2 games is ok but we have won several games where there have been some shocking plays. If that keeps up we are not going to last more than one game in the finals. They have to be more consistant.
Posted by: jonnyj, August 2 2010 6:02 PM
Last year we would have lost this game and others like this it makes a huge difference sitting in 4th instead of 10th. If anyone has taken notice of the draw they will realise that there is only quality teams left to play this year, i bet we find out if we are real contenders before the finals even begin

Another win well done. Benji you were a massive part of our 2005 Premiership without you we would not have got there and Hodgo was kicking then leaving you to just play footy. You are an awesome player. We need you for the tries, keep up those great passes awsome to watch.Thank god we found Benji.Go The Mighty Tigers.

The team's got a problem under the high ball on their own goal line. Tim Sheens needs to emphasize more on one man up / the rest down standing by to pick up the loose ball or defend if the opposition wins the contest. More talking is required here among the players A new goal kicker is urgently required.

agree with everyone, better to win ugly than not at all..but gee its hard to believe that if roosters beat dragons and we beat souths we are all equal first...our current form doesn't justify such a lofty position on the table...but we will take it...very ordinary against the sharks..regardless of who is out for the bunnies the team WILL lift another gear and secure a top 8 finish..then they can concentrate on a top 4 spot...goalkicking...I suggested they go after gordon of penrith before he made S.O.O. but that chance is now gone..sure hope we can find somebody quick....maybe put Sean Meaney on Beau's wing because he can kick goals. I feel Benji, although he has landed some great conversions, is really only a back-up kicker. GO TIGES

Dont really care if we win all of our games by 2 points its better than losing by 2.ugly but good win never the less, next 5 weeks will test, bring it on.tigers all the way!

Alex Flood, I reckon the players should play where the boss wants them to play, I'lll cheer them on. I'm rapped with our position despite the indifferent form. I'm lso rapped for young guys who are nearing a semis birth for the 1st time and Gareth who would love a crack at a final appearance. Enjoy the ride home because it will be a beauty. Tigers!!!

Pretty ordinary effort. On a positive note I thought Lui was starting to look good when he attacks the line.
Posted by: Ringo, August 2 2010 2:16 PM
Awful game to watch on telly, refereeing was a disgrace, all their tries coming from high kicks at least Wests can pass the ball and score tries. Don't forget how many games Benji has won for us with his spontanity and he can kick goals, he is not an El Masri that's all. Need really to be on our game against Souths always hard to beat.
Posted by: JG, August 2 2010 12:49 PM
Grateful for the win and yes it was ugly. But Cronulla scored from kicks and if I remember correctly we had 3 tries disallowed either being held up over the line or just short, so all in all a fare effort from the boys. GO TIGERS!!
Posted by: jeff, August 2 2010 10:57 AM
the next month will see how we will go in the finals.if we win most of them think we will be in a good position as the sides we play are all strong sides.Lets's get the run into the semis like we did in 2005
Posted by: Balmain Kid, August 2 2010 10:53 AM
Good to get the 2 points but that wasn't emi final footy. If Wade's crook next weekend and Jake Mullany is fit to resume, rush him in at least he can Kick goals, can defuse Bombs, make meters and score tries, I'm tired of the opposition scoring tries of bombs. We have to be careful of Chris Sandow or he will run rings around us with or without Big Sam Burgess!!
Posted by: wollongongtiger, August 2 2010 10:12 AM
2 pts is 2 pts! Pretty ordinary game, but a win none the less. I am sure Benji is more than aware of his goalkicking inabilities. Time for the Tigers to buy an all round player, who can kick goals! Hope the Tigers play better next Saturday night. Best of luck to Blake Ayshford on the hand injury. Go Tigers?
Posted by: happyrocktigerman, August 2 2010 9:39 AM
Goalkicking issue : Wade won't goalkick due to hamstring , Do we risk bringing Blake Lazarus back ? Defensively not much difference between Lui and Lazarus if we play him on the line in defence and not on the wing. We can't possibly expact Mullaney to come back 1st week from 20s after injury to play 1st grade. I feel it will do more harm than good. After Saturday night's high ball saga Wade has to go back to full back ,but just remember Trent Barrett puts up the best high balls in comp.

Please, never wear those jerseys again. . . as a spectator the players blend into the crowd and are almost impossible to see across the other side of the field. . . They wore them against Souths and got flogged. . . Now another poor display. . . Never wear them again.
Posted by: TIGER RALPH, August 2 2010 9:10 AM
YES. We are winning the close ones. But we need to get a goal kicker.
Posted by: Tiger Dan, August 2 2010 6:51 AM
Rather Win Ugly than Lose Pretty.
Posted by: Tiger69, August 2 2010 12:00 AM
Why on goal line defence does a forward come from behind the attacker and push the opponent towards your own goal line. Like alltgood tiger supporters I will always take a win. Goal line defence needs alot of thought. Too many times we work against ourselves.
Posted by: oli, August 1 2010 9:22 PM
Great. Well done boys. Another step towards the finals.
Posted by: happyrocktigerman, August 1 2010 8:45 PM
Not many positives to take out of performance Seemed to lack spark in defence. Got the 2 points but we need to improve. But we all have confidence if we all work hard for each other and get back to defense of a month ago we CAN turn it around . We don't need to score 5-6 tries each week we need to keep oppsition to 2 or less Thats what finals footy is all about and it starts this weekend . Go TIGERS
Posted by: cunno, August 1 2010 8:26 PM
Grateful for the win. This week, against Souths, begins the cycle of tough games heading into the semis. I will be at ANZ stadium to lend support, I hope heaps of Wests Tigers supporters do the same.
Posted by: Tigersrule, August 1 2010 7:59 PM
Well we are the ugly duckling at the moment but remember that duckling turned into a beautiful swan. One more win and we are playing semis again. Sure we would all like to see the boys playing real Tiger footy. I disagree with those who say we are not committed. No other side has won so many close games.According to the table this is our best season since winning the comp. So we all need to take another blood pressure pill and give the team the support they deserve. Tigersrule

I'd rather win ugly, than lose ugly .. !! Hang in there team, we're still winning, we've had a few injuries so our combinations are still in the making .. !!
Posted by: David Beesley, August 1 2010 7:03 PM
I was at the game and I must say I don't think I have ever felt so hollow after a win. I will take the 2 points but not that performance. Last year I thought we played brilliantly, yet missed the finals by 1 point. This year has been a year of comebacks from the dead and ugly, scrappy wins that see us in equal second position.
Posted by: vicki, August 1 2010 6:31 PM
Another ugly win. Travelled 4.5 hours to be there, happy for the result but...Good luck next week against souths, will need to improve and communicate better between players especially on the kicks.Hope the refereeing is better next time, we were all puzzled with lots of the decisions. You can do it,GO TIGERS.
Posted by: treno from laurieton, August 1 2010 5:49 PM
done it tough tigers, should have won it by fifty, so the experts say, but a good win agianst a spirited and commited sharks side.great to get the 2 points on offer and don't worry tiger fan the best is yet to come, revenge for the flogging we received from souths, come on tigers lets get square and show this comp what we can do when we are on song.
Posted by: Tiger Bill, August 1 2010 4:36 PM
The 2 pts was good to get, however; they were extremely lucky to get it, and i think the sharks were hard done by with their late no try. Weve got a lot of improving to do. I know you can do it Tigers, and 2 more pts should guarantee us some finals footy.
Posted by: buttucks, August 1 2010 3:57 PM
one more win and we should be in the finals...come on boyz..
Posted by: gosford wal, August 1 2010 3:55 PM
got to give lote some protection from the bombs! he was isolated 3 times.lui looks abit lost in defence playing inside lote.
Posted by: cal, August 1 2010 3:54 PM
Just happy to get the points but i am not impressed with how nervous we play at our home ground? This is where we should be playing our best attacking footy? Can't wait to get a second chance at souths next week and wrap up a finals berth.Go the Mighty Tigers Looking forward to winning again this year and showing that 2005 is not just a 1 off fluke!
Posted by: tigerdave, August 1 2010 2:59 PM
Lets be realistic, we played the bottom side and were lucky the referee was awful. I'm sick of everybody saying that there is room for improvement and that we win the tight ones.
Posted by: ZoZ, August 1 2010 2:35 PM
The Refs allowed the Sharks to get right back into the game with blatant offside play and holding down players for an eternity. Only those who were at the game could see how far offside the Sharks defenders were. Major concerns for the Tigers is the fact that they lost the plot in the last ten minutes, the high ball and Lote's defence out wide. Sharks did not score a decent try, all their points came from high kicks. Totally agree that the Refs absolutely killed the game last night, but it was not just the Sharks that were on the receiving end of the bad decision making

I want revenge against rabbits for that 50 point thumping at scg i was at the game and im still having nightmares about it revenge revenge against rabbits playing for there season please tigs.

Im a diehard supporter but gee we are ordinary at present .
Posted by: jj, August 1 2010 12:33 PM
well does anyone know what other option we have for goal kicker
Posted by: Alex Flood, August 1 2010 11:02 AM
Does anyone reckon Simon Dwyer should play Centre?
Posted by: bally, August 1 2010 10:47 AM
Good win tigers. They did score all their trys from kicks.Must say something about our defence last night but please stop going down to the wire as i have no finger nails left to bite lol.
Posted by: nathan, August 1 2010 10:37 AM
very ordinary and very lucky....I feel some guys need to focus on playing football rather than their media careers!!!!
Posted by: Lee, August 1 2010 10:34 AM
Good tough win which showed a lot of space for improvement well within the scope of this team. One big question - what are Tigers to do about goalkicking? Lawrence was tried but I remember Farah as a quite effective goal kicker three years ago. Will Tigers use a regular first grader or introduce a new fistgrader who is a regular goalkicker and capable player someone like Sean Meaney?
Posted by: matt c, August 1 2010 10:31 AM
We didn't play pretty in parts and piggy backing them out of their own half several times with penalties didnt help and the refereeing left alot to be desired too, that said we won the 2 vital points which keeps us up there...next week souths and we have the chance for payback after the last time we met and we have a stellar chance of putting on points to up the for and against seen as Sam burgess and their main forwards like Dave taylor wont be there! GO THE TIGERS.
Posted by: g mccabe, August 1 2010 10:21 AM
Tim, give Sean Meaney a go as he can kick goals.
Posted by: bruno, August 1 2010 9:55 AM
We need to lift our game for finals football, hopefully we can find that extra gear soon...
Posted by: bazpooley, August 1 2010 9:31 AM
As many of us predicted, the Sharks, with nothing to lose and pride to be restored, played enterprising football.Yet again, however, the Tigers showed enough determination to win, even though they are some distance away from playing the kind of football we all know they are capable of.But, look at the ladder, which without comment or remarks about last night's game, simply states Wests Tigers..... 28 points
Posted by: Pratten Park, August 1 2010 9:16 AM
After losing to the Silvertails, we needed those 2 points, so it was a much-needed, gutsy win by the Tigers, but oh so close. In previous years we would have lost that game, so we have got some ticker this year which will come in handy between now and the first weekend in October. I'll take the 2 points.
Posted by: beno, August 1 2010 9:16 AM
great win boys but if where gonna give this premiership we will have to improve alot we need a goal kicker all the misses will cost us in the end
Posted by: william, August 1 2010 8:59 AM
Great Result! Wests have regularlty lost against cellar dwellers. This time was different. The tigers scored five tries to three. GOOOOOOOOO Tigers!!!!
Posted by: matthew mccann, August 1 2010 8:44 AM
i reckon the tigers are lucky to get away with that win on Saturday against the sharks. our goal kicking was shocking but our performance was alright on the field,we really need a good goal kicker that wont cost us games
Posted by: Shalveen Ram, August 1 2010 7:48 AM
Will take the 2 points. For once i had sympathy for the opposing team.We appear to be the worst team under the high ball and every man and his dog is now kicking it in the air against us.Lote is a good attacker and he did save a try last night but he does disappear when they kick towards him.
Posted by: Bonner, August 1 2010 5:25 AM
This must be our last 'get out of jail free' card. No one played badly and we didn't ever look in danger but it wasn't convincing. I guess the players and coaches know how to move forward for next week. Rob Lui and Mitch Brown looked sharp. Liam is a champ!!! :-))) Tigers!!!
Posted by: tigermick, July 31 2010 11:01 PM
well done boys, it was never going to be a walk over, the sharks were always going to throw everything at us, and they did, they had absolutely nothing to lose , you are winning ugly but who cares ! you will click at the right time , just keep doing what you are doing and don't be hard on yourselves any other team would have been rolled by the sharks tonight ... I believe in you blokes and there isn't a team in the comp looking forward to playing YOU !!!!
Posted by: mark03, July 31 2010 10:56 PM
That has got to be one of the worst performances I have had the displeasure of witnessing. I will take the win. Can we work on defusing bombs and stop the jersey grabbing tackles.
Posted by: dongmei, July 31 2010 10:53 PM
good job can't wait next week
Posted by: joey, July 31 2010 10:48 PM
We are happy for the win and 2 points however need to recognise that a massive improvement is required in the coming weeks and in the semis.3 tries against us were scored via bombs and we have weakness in our defence out wide this week and last week especially. We also gave away a few ridicolous penalties lets lift and repeat 2005s effort ive still got a hangover go Tiges
Posted by: fuzzie, July 31 2010 10:32 PM
Win is a win,but they dont come any uglier. Was proud of Benji tonight ,thought he had a great game and his bombs are giving our boys great go ahead.
Posted by: tigergerry, July 31 2010 10:25 PM
Great to keep winning the tight games. Goal kicking is really becoming a nightmare. Worried about our form against more quality opposition ie, taking high balls and goal line defence. All in all very happy to be riding high!!! ps, where was the rest of the crowd?? Only 14900, dissapointing tigers fans...
Posted by: Garry, July 31 2010 10:15 PM
Just watched the game, and good to get 2 pts but we have some big problems if we can only beat Cronulla ( bottom of ladder ) by 2pts. Tigers are playing a so predictable style one out, standing flat on attack or going sideways, their not sure if to play a defensive or attacking game, this style is not their game and they need to get back to their natural game. This style must be frustrating for Benji, Robbie, Lote and Chris Lawrence. Take the pressure of Benji with the goal kicking for a while, and lets get some razzle dazzle again and we will see some big scores, if not season is over, as a lot better teams are coming, come on Tim some fresh new ideas are required for the finals.

Tonights game was a very poor game! The team seemed to be in gar gar land for most of the 80 minutes...! There was little or next to no commitment from the players it seemed as if they were all relying on their team mates to do the work, so they could just take it a bit easier... Cronulla played hard and with commitment. If not for the blown out penalty count against them they would have probably taken the 2 points. Guys I know it must be difficult to give 110% week in week out... but other sides are doing it... Lets give Souths heaps next week and keep us fans grinning and beaming with pride for our Mighty Tigers...!
Posted by: Dags63, July 31 2010 9:47 PM
A wins a wins but we were lucky to wins tonight, we need alot of improvement before we will win the comp.
Posted by: Steve H, July 31 2010 9:39 PM
I said last time the 2 points is what will get us to the finals and it seems the boys are working hard but I think footy is 90% mental!... I was hoping we would have put 30pts on these guys tonite but once again they out enthused us although we got they points...sure we got the win, again, against a side we should have put away easy..like the Cowboys like the Broncos, why is it so tough!... because mentally they wanted it more, we know what happened against the real teams the Eagles and the Dragons...lets get serious...switch on, and prove you guys are the REAL DEAL!!!!!...as a supporter I just want to get excited about a convincing win!
Posted by: mark, July 31 2010 9:35 PM

I'm sure we have another kicker in the club.on a good note you won. go the wests tigers.
Posted by: Franklin, July 31 2010 8:30 PM
Benji delights us with his try assists with deft passes and chips over the top but his goal-kicking has been ordinary.

Time to give it up Benji, I just don't think you are a goalkicker...
