Meet the Wests Tigers Coaching Staff

Mick Potter is confident Wests Tigers have the right balance of experience and enthusiasm in their coaching ranks in 2013.

Potter’s two-year appointment as NRL Head Coach marks a fresh beginning for Wests Tigers. He was named the Super League Coach of the Year in 2012 with Bradford after previous stints with Catalans and St Helens.

Supporting Potter is NRL Assistant Coaches Steve Georgallis and Royce Simmons, whose experience and wealth of knowledge will be invaluable.

Georgallis held the same role last season in first year at the Club after being Head Coach of Penrith in 2011.

Simmons returns to his role as NRL Assistant Coach following two years as St Helens Coach. Prior to his departure, Simmons held the same position at Wests Tigers from 2001 to 2010.

Playing a support role to Potter is Paul Fletcher, coach of the newly formed Wests Tigers NSW Cup side. Fletcher guided Balmain Ryde Eastwood Tigers to two NSW Cup grand finals. He will be assisted by former grade players Joe Thomas and Jason Williams.

Thomas was an Assistant Coach under Phil Gould at the Sydney Roosters in 19990 and was the reserve grade coach in 1996-97.

Williams coached the Bulldogs to an SG Ball premiership in 2009 and led Western Suburbs Magpies to the SG Ball minor premiership two years later. He took over the NSW Cup coaching job for the Magpies midway through last season.

Premiership winning NYC Coach Todd Payten again has the responsibility of nurturing the abundance of young talent in the U20s and will work alongside Joel Greig.

Potter said he was happy with his coaching staff and the formation of the Wests Tigers NSW Cup was a positive move. He added Fletcher was the right man to handle the transition of players coming into and out of the squad.

“Fletch has had a real good track record of managing players and their personalities. He can bring the best out of them,’’ Potter said.

“The style of play of the NSW Cup side won’t be too dissimilar to the NRL team so players who come into first grade know what to expect from me. It will be beneficial for all involved.”

Will be very interesting to see how the boys go under Mick Potter this year after so many years with Sheensy in charge. Great to see Benji back at 5/8 where he can play his natural game. One thing that I found frustrating in recent years was watching one of our bench players (usually a back) sit on his backside for 70 mins while some forwards are playing 80 mins straight and then get a run with 5-10 to play. The loss of Ellis, Heighno and Ryan could have an impact but I am hoping Tedesco comes back ok, Anasta helps with his experience, ball play and kicking game. Big year for Blair to stand up and show em the player he is. We still look pretty potent all over the park. Go the Tigers !!!! Anything other than a finals berth with the players we have would be dissapointing. Hoping injuries to our big boys, namely woodsy and big red are not too serious this year.February 14 2013 3:11 PM

The 3 key elements of a great club are, the coach, the players and the supporters, with each playing a vital role. The Tigers have under gone major changes for this year, with the coach and management looking at the future by rebuilding and bringing up new and hungry talent with a mix of leadership and experience. 2013 will be a year of learning, as you can't expect overnight miracles, anything good that comes from the boys this year will be great, beyond that it will be fantastic. The members and fans will play an important role, as this team will need our support as it will be tough going for them this year, I am in reality looking forward to 2014 after everyone has settled in. If the injuries are kept under control the boys will do the rest. To this Tiger team, enjoy this year, give 110%, and stay safe.February 14 2013 8:32 AM

I have a lot of faith in the coaching positions ,Mick Potter must be given a chance to sort out the NRL side and stablize key positions ,this is where Tigers faultered badly last year...it proved you can't just switch eg...second rower Fulton to five eighth...centre Lawrence to five eighth ...when we had the best five eighth playing at half...bring in Miller and let him settle in a position he plays all the time.I think Mick Potter is on the right track ,but lets not demand a top 4 or 8 finish in his first year any improvement on last year would be appreciated..good luck Mick and the Tigers....February 13 2013 3:01 PM

This will be a real challenge for Mick and his staff this year, including others assisting the coaches. But what will constitute a successful season for a 1st year coach in the NRL? A top 8 finish? Maybe but to me anything better than 26 points this year will be an improvement. In other words winning more than 50 percent of games played. I think that leaves some room for error in what is a time of change at the club. Anything less than that will disappointing and prompt a lot of questions.February 13 2013 12:38 PM
