Wests Tigers will look to create Club history when they take on the South Sydney Rabbitohs this Sunday by making it three wins in a row to start the season.
Having started the year with back-to-back wins over the Titans and Dragons, Jason Taylor’s side come into this week’s match against the defending premiers with plenty of confidence — something which they’ll definitely need against a side that’s won the NRL premiership, World Cup Challenge and Auckland Nines in the last six months.
Michael Maguire’s men have started the year in similarly impression fashion, with strong wins over the Brisbane Broncos and Sydney Roosters so far. They’ll be looking to consolidate their spot in the competition’s top four this weekend when they take on Wests Tigers — a match they lost in this corresponding fixture last year, 25-16.
That game saw a truly memorable encounter take place; Greg Inglis was knocked out in the opening minute by Tim Simona, before the centre snared himself a first-half double as Luke Brooks and James Tedesco ran rampage against Souths’ big men.
Veteran winger Pat Richards said this week that “there’s definitely been no doubt about what happened last year”, and while that might be the case, there’s no doubt that the confidence gained from winning the first two games of the year (a feat not achieved since 2008) will have Taylor’s side in the best possible position to upset the premiers.
Souths hold the wood over Wests Tigers in terms of recent results, with that win in Round 3 last year the only victory for the visitors in their last seven encounters. When they meet this Sunday, It’ll also be a staggering 199 days since South Sydney lost a rugby league match, with their last loss coming against the Roosters on September 4, 2014.
