Wests Tigers have bowed out of the 2016 Auckland Nines after going down to the Newcastle Knights 21-16 in their final Rangitoto Pool game of the competition.

The loss sees Wests Tigers leave the tournament with one win and two defeats.

It was a bright start for Jason Taylor's side, with speedster Josh Addo-Carr picking up a loose ball and racing 65m between defenders to score in the corner for the opening try.

Luck would soon shift in favour of the Knights, who scored the next two tries — to Danny Levi and Robbie Rochow — in controversial fashion to lead 11-4 at half-time.

Wests Tigers wouldn't go away without a fight, with Manaia Cherrington scooting over from a quick tap and Addo-Carr showing his speed once again off a long kick from Littlejohn to give themselves a chance at victory in the final nine minutes.

However, a sideline try to Akuila Uate and handling errors from Wests Tigers saw their finals hopes slip away as the Knights held on to record a 21-16 win.
