Wests Tigers players will proudly run out on to ANZ Stadium for this weekend’s NRL Indigenous Round carrying support for Indigenous recognition on their backs.
Wearing the RECOGNISE campaign logo on the back of specially designed jerseys, Wests Tigers will be supporting the campaign’s work to end the exclusion of Indigenous people in the Australian constitution and to deal with racial discrimination.
The RECOGNISE logo will also appear on-field and on the uniforms of the referees as part of NRL Indigenous Round.
Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe said the partnership with RECOGNISE is one that the Club is proud to be associated with.
“It’s important that the game recognises the great contribution that Indigenous Australians make to the sport of rugby league,” Pascoe said.
“As a Club we are showing our support for the NRL Indigenous Round by wearing a special one-off jersey this weekend and we are proud to partner with the RECOGNISE campaign.
“The RECOGNISE logo will be on display on the back of Wests Tigers’ Indigenous round jerseys this weekend, which is a great cause that aims to eliminate racial discrimination in Australia,” he said.
Further cementing the partnership between the Club and RECOGNISE, Wests Tigers players have signed a special banner which will travel the country in support of the cause.
The banner will feature at NRL matches and will give players and clubs the opportunity to sign on and help RECOGNISE raise awareness about the need for recognition and dealing with racial discrimination in the constitution.
RECOGNISE Joint Campaign Director Tanya Hosch praised Wests Tigers for their support and for playing a significant role in helping to spread the word and to bring the issue to the forefront of people’s thinking.
“Indigenous Round is a chance to celebrate the sporting excellence and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players,” Ms Hosch said.
“Recognition on the field is important and by partnering with RECOGNISE, Wests Tigers are showing their support for recognising Indigenous people in the constitution too.”
Ms Hosch said it’s great to see the NRL clubs take action against racial discrimination and the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Constitution.
“Everyone can make a contribution to the RECOGNISE movement, watching the players signing the banner in support of RECOGNISE sends that message to fans, sponsors and community,” she said.
Wests Tigers will wear a special Indigenous jersey this weekend designed by artist and Club Member Dennis Golding. The player-worn jerseys will be signed and auctioned off following Sunday’s game, with a donation to be made to RECOGNISE.
