Where We Stand After Round 23

Dan Talintyre

Competition - NSW Cuo
Round - 23
Teams – Tigers V Mounties
Date – 13th of August 2016
Venue – Campbelltown Stadium
Photographer – Cox
Description –

See where Wests Tigers stand in all three grades after an enthralling weekend of action saw the Club pick up one win and go down narrowly in both others.

Wests Tigers NRL side were beaten by the Gold Coast Titans in the final seconds of their clash on Saturday afternoon, with Jarryd Hayne landing a field goal in the last play.

That heartbreak was a similar feeling for the Club’s Holden Cup side, who were also desperately unlucky not to defeat the Titans as they went down 36-34 in the end.

There was good news, though, with the Club’s Intrust Super Premiership side securing a finals berth — leading from start-to-finish to defeat the Wentworthville Magpies 39-14.

See how all three Wests Tigers grades are positioned after Round 23 of the competition!

Don't miss our last home game of the year against the Raiders at Leichhardt Oval!
Round 23 Results, Standings

NRL

Record: Played 21, Won 10, Lost 11, Drawn 0

Position: 10th (24 points)

Last Result: Lost 19-18 vs. Gold Coast Titans at Campbelltown Sports Stadium

Top Try-Scorers: James Tedesco (14), David Nofoaluma (14), Kevin Naiqama (10)

Remaining Fixtures: Round 24: Away to Penrith Panthers (7th), Round 25: Away to New Zealand Warriors (9th), Round 26: Home to Canberra Raiders (3rd)

Comment: The race for seventh and eighth spot continues to tighten up, with the Titans scraping home to sneak into the top eight. Wests Tigers have their destiny in their own hands, with games in the next fortnight against the Panthers (7th) and Warriors (9th) both semi-finals in their own right. At best, the Club could finish as high as fifth. At worst, they could drop down to 12th — such is the close nature of the competition.

HOLDEN CUP

Record: Played 21, Won 11, Lost 8, Drawn 2

Position: 7th (28 points)

Last Result: Lost 36-34 vs. Gold Coast Titans at Campbelltown Sports Stadium

Top Try-Scorers: Obed Karwhin (12), Roman Ioelu (9), Veiru Mapesone (9)

Remaining Fixtures: Round 24: Away to Penrith Panthers (1st), Round 25: Away to New Zealand Warriors (13th), Round 26: Home to Canberra Raiders (8th)

Comment: With players starting to return from injury, Wests Tigers Holden Cup are putting together some quality attacking football, but simply missed the defensive resolve needed on Saturday. They’ll face a huge test this week against the Panthers (who can wrap up the minor premiership with a win) but they’ll know that simply one more win in the next three weeks guarantees them a finals finish. With just four points separating second and seventh, a top-four finish isn’t out of the equation either.

INTRUST SUPER PREMIERSHIP

Record: Played 20, Won 13, Lost 7, Drawn 0

Position: 3rd (32 points)

Last Result: Won 39-14 vs. Wentworthville Magpies at Campbelltown Sports Stadium

Top Try-Scorers: Josh Addo-Carr (18), Chance Peni (10), Watson Heleta (9)

Remaining Fixtures: Round 24 vs. Sea Eagles (11th), Round 25 vs. Knights (12th)

Comment: With six wins from their last seven games, the Club’s Intrust Super Premiership side is really hitting their straps at the right time of the year. Saturday’s win guaranteed a place in the finals — the next task with two weeks remaining is to catch the second-placed Illawarra Cutters, who sit just one win ahead. Their for-and-against is down on that of the Cutters, but with games against the two bottom teams in the competition coming up to finish the year, second spot is certainly still a real possibility.
