Wests Tigers Head Coach Ivan Cleary and Chris Lawrence spoke to the media after tonight’s Round 10 loss against the South Sydney Rabbitohs at ANZ Stadium.

After a positive opening month under the new Head Coach, Cleary said his team were well below par on Friday night and simply not good enough in the fundamentals.

“The first half we were just beaten in the fundamentals of the game,” Cleary conceded.

“Probably physically, and when we also had opportunities, we couldn’t build pressure.

“We really shot ourselves in the foot, effectively.

“It’s just where we are — there’s a lot of work to do. Credit to Souths, they played strongly and put us under pressure, and we couldn’t return favour on the night.

“There was just things in the game tonight we didn’t control well enough.”

One highlight from the night, however, was the performance of lock forward Elijah Taylor, whose game-high 62 tackles drew special praise from the Head Coach.

“Elijah has been putting in that sort of effort for years,” he said.

“He turns up every week and prepares as hard as he can. He plays 80 minutes and he never shirks his duties. He’s probably a good player to model yourself on in terms of being a professional player and I thought he was absolutely outstanding tonight.”
