Wests Tigers hooker Matt McIlwrick says his team need a much-improved defensive effort this Friday night when they take on the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium.

Missing more than 50 tackles as a team in last week's loss to the South Sydney Rabbitohs, McIlwrick said the focus for this week's clash was all about improving his side's defence.

"Everything comes down to our training," he said.

"We've really stepped that up since Ivan has been here and we just have to keep working hard. Perfect practice makes perfect on the weekend, so we're working hard at that.

"Ivan used the word soft after the game a fair bit and that is what we were. We didn't front up at the start of the game and you can't win games these days if you turn up soft.

"We knew what we had done wrong so Ivan didn't have to say too much.

"We just need to install now an 80-minute performance, which we haven't had all year.

"We're building towards that and hopefully we can build towards that this week."
