Wests Tigers Intrust Super Premiership side have gone down 40-14 to the Wentworthville Magpies in a disappointing encounter on Saturday afternoon.

Despite some positive moments in attack and resilience in defence, David Heath’s side were simply no match for a determined Wentworthville outfit, and remain on the bottom of the Intrust Super Premiership ladder midway through the 2017 season.

Boosted by the inclusion of Jack Littlejohn and Joel Edwards for the clash, Wests Tigers started the match strongly but soon found themselves exposed down the right edge, with George Jennings getting on the outside of Nathan Milone to score in the corner.

Bureta Faraimo converted to give the visitors a 6-0 lead after just five minutes of play.

Off the back of some bruising defence, the home side would hit back shortly after through a lovely sweeping play to the right, with sharp hands from Watson Heleta putting Milone over in the corner, cutting the Magpies’ lead to 6-4 after 15 minutes.

Wentworthville would continue to make inroads down the left edge and soon turned their dominance into points as Jennings grabbed his second try of the afternoon — Faraimo again showing good touch to convert from out wide for a 12-4 advantage.

And off the back of two seven-tackle sets in a row, the visitors would race to a commanding 24-4 lead, with Cameron King and Honeti Tuha both crossing the line.

Needing to hit back before the break, it took a brilliant piece of skill from talented 19-year-old centre Toni Tali for Wests Tigers to eat in to the Magpies’ advantage, with Veiru Mapesone converting from close range to cut the visitors’ lead to 24-10 at half-time.

Wests Tigers looked to have hit back soon after the break when Littlejohn crossed out wide, but his effort was called for an obstruction after a long discussion from the officials. That would prove to be costly for the home side as the visitors would cross for another controversial four-pointer, with a corrected six-again call giving them possession on attack before Tuha dived through his own man to score close to the line.

Faraimo’s first missed conversion of the day saw the scoreline remain at 28-10 in favour of the visitors, before Bayley Sironen’s kick out on the full gifted them further attacking opportunities, with Tuha completing his hat-trick off a good kick from Troy Dargan.

Faraimo had no problems converting from in front for a 34-10 lead after 55 minutes.

Wests Tigers would hit back through Milone after some good hands from Littlejohn and Mapesone in the build-up, but the afternoon belonged to Wentworthville and, in particular Tuha, who’s clever hands on the left shortly after set up Faraimo for the final try of the afternoon — ensuring a dominant 26-point victory for the visitors.

Wentworthville Magpies 40 (Tuha 3, Jennings 2, King, Faraimo tries; Faraimo 6/7 goals) def. Wests Tigers 14 (Milone 2, Tali tries; Mapesone 1/2, Littlejohn 0/1 goals)
