New Wests Tigers recruit Jamal Idris says he feels like he's settling well into the Club as he was joined by his teammates for the first day of pre-season training on Monday.

Having spent 18 months away from rugby league, Idris has been training with the Club's coaching staff for the past few weeks to get himself right for the start of pre-season, and says he feels in a good place to continue his push for a return to the NRL in season 2017.

"It's definitely fair to say that this time I'm here for myself," Idris said.

"I was talking to my old man the other day and sitting there saying that this was the first time I had a pre-season I was actually enjoying. I'm enjoying coming to training and happy to be here — there's a good vibe around. You see all the young kids here and you remember what it was like to be their age and be spritely, and they sit there and look at you and smile and there's nothing you can do but smile and laugh.

"I don't feel that I have to prove myself to anyone but myself this time around.

"This is a year for me to prove to myself how good I can be.

"Training for the past few weeks has really helped me a lot," he said.

"I almost hit my PB the other day in our testing so I'm pretty happy about that."
