Wests Tigers Holden Cup Head Coach Chris Hutchinson gives an update on how the squad is travelling heading into 2017 trial matches next month.

With all second-year Holden Cup players currently training with the Intrust Super Premiership side prior to the trials, Hutchinson said it was pleasing to be able to work closely with a strong rookie contigent of this year's team in order to help develop combinations.

"The rookies we've got here are going really well," Hutchinson said.

"They're getting better every day.

"We had a trial just before the Christmas break against Canberra where all the rookies played, which was good. Guys like Josh Bermingham, Blake Higgins, Jarrod Tompkins and Corey Kurneth — they all played really well and have trained really.

"Jake Scott is another one who has been training really well."

With just over three weeks until the team's next trial match, Hutchinson said the focus for the team was about ensuring they are physically ready for the start of the season.

"We're looking just to get some more metres in the legs, do a little bit more contact and some more opposed sessions," he said. "We'll do a bit with the ISP side over the next few weeks to help that, so I'm looking forward to it."
