Wests Tigers Head Coach Ivan Cleary had some stirring words for his side following a gutsy 22-18 defeat to the Sydney Roosters this evening at Allianz Stadium.

Made to do a mountain of defensive work throughout the match, Cleary said his underdog side were certainly ahead of schedule as they seek to re-build the squad for the season ahead.

"We're definitely further ahead of where I thought we'd be," he said.

"I think I made the comment a few weeks back that the build hasn't started yet — it has now.

"That's a credit to the players.

"There was a period of recovery when those players were leaving, but the last eight weeks we've been very competitive, won games we should have and won a tight one last week.

"We still need to be better in those tight games, but we're being competitive.

"We haven't been in the finals race for a long time, so it's a credit to the boys for the resilience that they're showing and for the ways in which they're trying to improve."
