Wests Tigers forward Josh Aloiai says there's been some subtle changes to the pre-season this year under Coach Michael Maguire as the team looks to start the season on a positive note in their opening trial against Penrith this Saturday.

Aloiai, who won't feature alongside new recruits Adam Doueihi, Luciano Leilua, Billy Walters and Zane Musgrove in his side's opening hit out against Penrith, said that Maguire's second pre-season in charge had seen the side adopt a smarter approach with the Glenora Bears junior determined to lift his role within the squad.

"Everyone knows what Madge is like [with training] and we're really happy with all of the hard work we've put in so far," Aloiai enthused.

"The most exciting part is seeing how it transfers on to the field.

“It's a good chance now for boys that got selected in to the group playing this weekend to show all the things we've been working tirelessly on for months. We want to see it carried on to the field and we're excited to see it.

"For me, it's always going further and being stronger in pre-season — being a little bit smarter and continuing to build on everything you learn in the season," he said.

“I’m excited to play with our forward pack and all our combinations come together,

“For me, it’s learning the cycle of the game. I’ve been working with Madge a bit and he’s mentoring me on my role and how to do better in my role.

“He definitely spends a lot of time with you, even asking the younger ones in the team to try and help them improve as players and as people. He’s always checking in and letting you know how you can better do your role.”
