Throwback Thursday: Wests Tigers vs Gold Coast Titans

Wests Tigers will travel to Cbus Super Stadium on Thursday night to meet the Gold Coast Titans in the opening match of Round 4.

Since the Titans were admitted to the competition in 2007, the two teams have faced off on twenty-three occasions, with Wests Tigers chalking up nine victories.

While the Titans have a strong record against Michael Maguire’s men, Cbus Super Stadium has proven to be a happy hunting ground for the joint-venture, with the club winning 55% of its matches at the venue.

Ahead of Thursday night’s clash, we’re taking a look back at three of the most memorable clashes between Wests Tigers and the Gold Coast Titans.

Round 18, 2010

More than 14,000 people were attracted to Campbelltown Sports Stadium on a Friday night in 2010 to witness a top-of-the-table clash between the sixth-placed Wests Tigers and the third-placed Titans.

Both sides traded early blows and the scores remained locked throughout the opening stages of the match, before a moment of brilliance from Benji Marshall broke the tie on the stroke of half-time.

Receiving the ball from Chris Lawrence, Marshall attempted to kick a 51-metre field goal, with the ball striking the crossbar and going over to give his side the lead.

The kick remains the longest successful field goal attempt in NRL history and would prove decisive as Wests Tigers emerged triumphant by one point.

The win catapulted the Tigers above the Titans and into third position on the ladder as both teams would go on to reach the qualifying final later that season.

Round 2, 2014

After a tough opening round loss at the hands of the Dragons, Wests Tigers travelled North in search of their first win of the 2014 season.

On a scorching Sunday afternoon, Pat Richards and James Tedesco got their side off to a blazing start with two tries in the opening five minutes of the match.

The Titans soon hit back through Aiden Sezer, but were thoroughly outplayed in the first half by a dominant Wests Tigers outfit that extended its lead through tries to Pat Richards and Bodene Thompson.

Shortly after the break, David Nofoaluma broke several tackles to cross for his first try of the season before a slick set play sent Martin Taupau through the line to seal the result.

Young guns Luke Brooks and James Tedesco combined to put the icing on the cake for Wests Tigers, who emerged with an encouraging thirty-point victory.

Round 1, 2015

After disappointing campaigns that saw both clubs miss out on the top eight in 2014, the Gold Coast Titans and Wests Tigers entered the 2015 season full of optimism.

Current Wests Tigers’ centre James Roberts got the scoring underway for the Titans, before the away side hit back through left-winger Pat Richards.

After being sent to the sin-bin for a professional foul, Ryan James returned to give the Titans the lead going into half-time.

After the break, Mitchell Moses and Tim Simona combined to give Pat Richards his second try of the night, before James Tedesco crashed over to put his side in front.

When James Roberts fooled the defence to score with ten minutes remaining, it appeared as though the match was destined for extra-time.

However, Pat Richards stepped up as time expired, slotting a field goal on the stroke of full-time to break Titans’ hearts and steal victory for his side.
