Match Report: Round 24 vs Dragons

Wests Tigers have suffered an agonising 24-22 defeat to the St George Illawarra Dragons at CommBank Stadium.

Brett Kimmorley’s men led for much of the match but were unable to hold on as the Dragons kicked a 79th minute penalty goal to claim victory.

Jayden Su’A registered the first points of the afternoon by latching onto a grubber kick in the 5th minute.

After a grinding period of play, Adam Doueihi provided his side with their first real attacking opportunity by trapping a kick from Ben Hunt and racing downfield.

Cody Ramsey was sin-binned for a professional foul on the play and Fa’amanu Brown took advantage by scoring his sixth try of the season.

Tom Freebairn then crossed for the first try of his NRL career off the back of a strong run and offload from Adam Doueihi.

When Cody Ramsey returned, Jack Bird quickly replaced his teammate on the sideline as the centre was sin-binned for dissent towards referee Liam Kennedy.

Jock Madden made the most of the extra space by poking through a hole and passing off to Tom Freebairn, who completed his double.

Daine Laurie looked to have crashed over for his side’s fourth of the afternoon, but was deemed to have been held up over the line.

Wests Tigers repelled a late attacking raid from the Dragons to maintain their ten point lead until halftime.

Tautau Moga scored the first try of the second half before nearly securing his second off an intercept.

Moga looked certain to score, but was taken over the sideline by Adam Doueihi after a sensational length-of-the-field chase.

Wests Tigers couldn’t prevent the Dragons from levelling the scores as Jack Bird found Zac Lomax with a grubber kick into the in-goal.

The hosts soon hit the front once again as Zane Musgrove burst through the defensive line and offloaded to Jock Madden.

The nimble halfback stepped past Cody Ramsey and beat Zac Lomax to the tryline to put his side up by six.

Wests Tigers looked to have secured a penalty from a failed short dropout, but the kick was ruled to have struck the foot of Junior Pauga.

This allowed the Dragons to tie the match in the 75th minute before Zac Lomax capitalised on an error to run downfield before being hit high by Asu Kepaoa.

Kepaoa was sent to the sin bin and Lomax kicked his side to victory with a penalty goal from the side-line.

Wests Tigers will now turn their attention to the final game of the season against the Canberra Raiders at Leichhardt Oval next Sunday.
