Report: Jersey Flegg Round 9 vs Dragons

Wests Tigers have fallen to a heavy 56-18 Jersey Flegg Cup defeat to the Dragons at Lidcombe Oval on Sunday.

The home side took the lead early in the contest, however, the Red V ultimately proved too classy on the day.

Lyric Craft-Te Moananui grabbed the match's opening try for St. George Illawarra, before teenage halfback Jared Haywood sent Max Taotua over for Wests Tigers.

After Craft-Te Moananui collected his second, a nicely worked scrum play from Wests Tigers produced more points. Solomone Saukuru crossed in the corner to put his side ahead by two after 16 minutes.

The Dragons did take control of the match to conclude the second half, though, as tries from Jared Johnson, Cyrus Stanley-Traill, and Blake Metcalfe gave them a 28-12 lead at the break.

Saukuru displayed power and strength in scoring a second try to open the second half. Logan Brookes had the last pass on his Jersey Flegg Cup debut.

From there though, the Dragons stamped their authority on the contest as Campbell Rubie’s 62nd minute effort was quickly followed by a slashing try to halfback Kade Reed.

Further four-pointers to Ryan Hutchinson and speedy centre Charles Heidke secured the big win for the Red V on Sunday afternoon.

Dragons 56 (Craft-Te Moananui 2, Heidke 2, Johnson, Stanley-Traill, Metcalfe, Rubie, Reed, Hutchinson tries; Reed 8/10 goals) defeated Wests Tigers 18 (Saukuru 2, Ma. Taotua tries; Craig 3/3 goals) at Lidcombe Oval.
