The ROAR Academy and RISE Winter Development Programs concluded earlier this week, rounding out another period of growth and improvement for the next generation of female Wests Tigers.
The program provided the opportunity for some of the sharpest teenage talent to embark on a challenging 6-week period of training before putting themselves to the test in a series of gala days, with girls from U13s to U18s, being invited into the elite programs.
Head of Female Pathways David Fauonuku shared that the program was a fantastic growth opportunity not only for the players, but also for coaches and club staff alike.
“We’re really pleased with how the program played out; everyone involved put so much in and got even more out of it, so it was great to see the fruits of everyone’s effort.
“For some of them it was their first time in the system, and for others they’ve been part of the system for a long time and are eager to press for selections in Lisa Fiaola and Tarsha Gale.”
While the U13 squad played an internal trial, the U14s and U15s competed in a gala day against the Roosters, Bears, Sea Eagles, Panthers, and Raiders. Although gala days do not record scoring, the Tigers squads put on a particularly strong showing against their opponents.
The U16s also impressed, going undefeated against the Panthers, Eels, and Bulldogs.
They also had the opportunity to clash with a touring side from Tonga - claiming a victory in what Fauonuku says was an exciting occasion for the young squad.
“Playing the side from Tonga was a great experience for the girls and the staff. It gave everyone an opportunity to test themselves and see what we’re capable of against different sorts of opponents.”
The ROAR Academy also saw a group of U18s do six weeks of training, with the players set to be given the chance to compete for a spot in the Club’s Tarsha Gale Cup squad at the start of next year.
The Wests Tigers invite aspiring players and staff to put themselves forward for selection for the upcoming female Junior Representatives preseasons starting in November. Expression of interest information will be available over the next week.
The Club would also like to extend its gratitude to the Glenquarie All Stars, All Saints Liverpool, Campbelltown City Kangaroos and Concord Burwood Wolves junior rugby league clubs for allowing their facilities to be used for the development programs.
