Some promising and exciting youngsters from the Wests Tigers’ Chris Lawrence Cubs program are gaining some valuable experience development as part of their next stage in their rugby league journey.
Named after former Wests Tigers centre Chris Lawrence who played 253 games for the club, the U16 Cubs program has been running for the past three years.
The program is designed to prepare players from next year’s Harold Matthews Cup squads at Balmain and Western Suburbs whilst giving them their first opportunity to represent the Wests Tigers.
Players are selected for the Cubs program over an 18-month period involving the winter development and summer programs.
The Cubs had their first hit out recently against a quality Gold Coast Titans junior team.
Following a slowing start, the Cubs improved with a much better second half performance under Coach Adam Whitelaw.
The squad is now preparing to take on a touring junior St Helens team from England at Kirkham Oval, Camden, on Saturday, 10 October, at 2.30pm.
Players who have participated in previous Wests Tigers Cub programs who have graduated into the club’s NRL system include Heamasi Makasini, Heath Mason, Kit Laulilii, Luke Laulilii, Christian Taupau-Moors, Pheonix Godinet, Tony Sukkar and Vaka Aho.
