Wests Tigers beat Wenty 28-26 in NSW Cup trial

Wests Tigers recorded a 28-26 win over Wentworthville Magpies in a NSW Cup trial at Campbelltown Sports Stadium today.


Wentworthville opened the scoring in the 11th minute when former Balmain player Dean Parata scored next to the posts from dummy half. Half-back Api Pewhairangi converted the try for a 6-0 lead to the Magpies.


Four minutes later, Wests Tigers centre Rory Brien scored off a set play with Joel Luani from a scrum win. Meaney converted for a 6-all scoreline.


Wests Tigers went to a 10-6 lead in the 22nd minute when a grubber kick by full-back James Tedesco bounded off a defender for winger David Nofoaluma to score in the right corner. Meaney failed to convert the try.


The Magpies drew level at 10-all three minutes later when centre Jacob Loko used his strength to brush off three defenders to score in the left corner. The try was not converted.


Wests Tigers regained the lead when from a scrum win, centre Asipeli Fine broke the defence to race 25 metres before being pulled down five metres from the tryline. A quick play the ball saw powerful second-rower Ben Murdoch-Masila steam onto the ball to slam the ball down with three defenders on him. Meaney converted the try for a 16-10 lead after 31 minutes.


Half-back Luke Brooks kicking game was on song in the first half and a superb 40/20 kick led to a try in the 33rd minute. The ball was spread right from the scrum resulting in Nofoaluma diving over for his second try for a 22-10 lead. Meaney failed to convert the try.


Tedesco gave Wests Tigers a 26-10 lead inside the final minute when he finished off some good work by forward Sitaleki Akaoula. Meaney converted the try for a 28-10 lead at half-time.


2nd Half

Wenworthville got back to to 28-14 in the 44th minute when Jon Pepa burrowed his way over the line. Pewhairangi converted the try for a 28-16 scoreline.


The Magpies swooped on a grubber kick 30 metres out from their own line to race downfield resulting in a try to Pewhairangi in the corner. He failed to convert his own try for a 28-20 scoreline.


A crossfield kick saw Daniel Penese catch the ball to fall over the tryline to score in the 59th minute to leave the Magpies trailing 28-24. Pewhairangi converted the try to leave the Magpies trailing 28-26 scoreline.
