Wests Magpies recorded a thrilling 24-22 victory over Balmain Tigers in a quality Wests Tigers U15s development match at Campbelltown Sports Stadium today.


With the game being played over 2 x 25 minutes halves, the Magpies opened the scoring in the opening minutes when lock Blake Leaver scored out wide for a 4-0 lead. Half-back Netane Masima converted the try for a 6-0 scoreline.


Balmain appeared to score in the ninth minute when five-eighth Ryan Papenhuyzen dived over from dummy half but the ball was quickly picked up by a Magpies player and play went on.


The Tigers were awarded when centre Zac Allen after good lead up by full-back Angelo Panambalana and Papenhuyzen. The try was converted from the sideline by Papenhuyzen for a 6-all scoreline after 15 minutes.


Balmain went to a 10-6 lead when Papenhuyzen sliced through a gap to put the foot down before pushing off a cover defender to score a fine solo 80 metre try behind the posts. He converted his own try for a 12-6 lead with five minutes remaining.


The Tigers took a 12-6 lead into half-time.


2nd Half


Wests hit back with a try to prop Mickey Poseta near the posts. The try was converted by Masima.


Leaver scored his second try when he crashed over under the posts to give Wests a 16-12 lead. Masima converted for an 18-12 lead.


The Magpies went to a 22-12 lead when second-rower Hans Taala crashed over under the posts. Masima converted for a 24-12 lead with 10 minutes remaining.


Balmain hit back two minutes later when winger Tyrell Wikaire scored in the left corner after good work by Jordan Kidd. Papenhuyzen converted from the sideline for a 24-18 scoreline.


The Tigers got back to 24-22 inside the final 40 seconds when centre Bradley Booby finished off a backline play to dive over in the corner. The sideline conversion attempt from Papenhuyzen was waved away to leave the Magpies with a two point win.


Wests Tigers player Mitchell Moses presented the man of the match award for Balmain to the very talented Ryan Papenhuyzen.


Wests Tigers player Luke Brooks presented the man of the match award for Wests to hard working forward Blake Leaver.
