Wests Magpies recorded a strong 28-8 victory over Balmain Tigers in the Wests Tigers U14s development game at Campbelltown Sports Stadium today.


Played over 2 x 25 minutes halves, Balmain opened the scoring with a try to centre Abdulla Matar for a 4-0 lead out wide after some great lead up work by Johan Trujillo, Will Lawson and Scott Brooks. The try was not converted by half-back Lawrence Zarounas.


Wests hit back a short time later when lock Nathan Patalo when he picked up the ball from the scrum and raced 30 metres to score under the posts. Winger Taufu Afu converted the try for a 6-4 lead. The score stayed that way till half-time in a tight first half.


2nd Half

Wests went to a 10-4 lead nine minutes after half-time when Shondre Lee scored out wide. Afu converted the try to give the Magpies a 12-4 lead.


A barnstorming run by prop Jeff Illi saw the Magpies take a 16-4 lead. Afu converted the try for an 18-4 lead with 11 minutes remaining.


A great inside ball by half-back Ailand Pihema put lock Nathan Patolo into the clear before he produced a one handed flick pass to send Lee over for his second try. Afu converted to give Wests a 24-4 lead with eight minutes remaining.


Another great inside ball by Pihema saw Michael Chan Check race 60 metres to score near the posts. Lee converted the try for a 28-4 lead.


Balmain scored a late try from dummy half for a 28-8 scoreline. The try was not converted by Zarounas.


Wests Tigers NRL Assistant Coach Steve Georgallis presented the man of the match awards to Wests lock Nathan Patolo and Balmain five-eighth Curtis Wilson.
