Wests Tigers hooker Matt McIlwrick says he's feeling settled in his new colours after a strong performance to start the season against the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Joining Wests Tigers this season following stints at the Cronulla Sharks, Sydney Roosters, and Canberra Raiders, the 25-year-old said he was happy to start the year with a win.

"It's always good to get that first win under the belt," McIlwrick said.

"We're looking to build on that and there's no better place to do that than at home.

"For me personally, I had a great pre-season and felt all right going into Round 1. Obviously with Matt Ballin and Jacob Liddle out, I had to step up and try and make the most of that.

"I get that opportunity again this week and I'm looking forward to stepping up again.

McIlwrick also provided an update on the fitness of Ballin, who is expected to return from injury this Sunday in the Club's Intrust Super Premiership match against the Penrith Panthers.

"I think he's travelling really well — he's training with us in full now," he said.

"It's just a matter of when he's comfortable to step back in, he will. I think he's learned from the past not to push it too much — especially with a major knee injury — but he's travelling really well and training well too.

"He's helped me out at training immensely, which has been great."
