Wests Tigers Holden Cup side have gone down in a tight affair to the Newcastle Knights this afternoon, with the home side running out 28-18 winners in the end.

Trailing 18-6 at the half-time break, Chris Hutchison's side came storming back in to the contest in the second half with tries to Liam Pakau and Peter Pakoti levelling the match at 18-all, before Heath Gibbs' third try of the day for Newcastle put the hosts back in front.

A late attacking raid for Wests Tigers had the visitors in prime position to steal the win, but a kick to the in-goal on the full allowed Mitch Andrews to take the quick tap and race 80 metres to score — ensuring an 10-point win for the Knights in front of their home fans.

Newcastle Knights 28 (Gibbs 3, Andrews 2, Croker tries; Gudgeon 2/6 goals) def. Wests Tigers 18 (Seyfarth, Pakoti, Pakau tries; Tautaiolefua 3/3 goals)
