Wests Tigers will head to the foot of the mountains to take on the Penrith Panthers this Sunday full of confidence after a convincing last-start victory.
Having threatened to upset a number of quality teams in recent weeks, Ivan Cleary’s men finally produced the 80-minute performance they’ve been capable of — turning on the pressure in defence to walk away with a strong 26-4 win over the Gold Coast Titans.
After essentially ending the Titans’ finals hopes with that win, they’ll now head to Penrith with the goal of doing the same; Anthony Griffin’s men currently sit level on 24 points with the 8th placed Dragons and two points behind the 7th placed Sea Eagles.
Even with defeat, Penrith’s finals hopes would be far from over with games against the Raiders (10th), Dragons (8th) and Sea Eagles (7th) to close out the year, but Griffin’s side won’t want to give up any momentum having strung four wins in a row together.
Their last start win over the Bulldogs was far from pretty, but was the right result in the end, and they’ll no doubt be looking to produce another similar performance this week.
Penrith will likely again be without captain Matt Moylan as he battles a hamstring injury, with Tyrone May named in the halves alongside Nathan Cleary. Moylan has been named amongst the reserves alongside Dean Whare, who could make his return to the side after making a successful comeback from a jaw injury last week in Intrust Super Premiership.
For Wests Tigers, Cleary has named the same 17 players that got the job done on the Gold Coast, with Josh Aloiai and Ava Seumanufagai both listed amongst the reserves.
Wests Tigers have only won of their past five games against the Penrith Panthers, but surprisingly, have won three of the last four games played out at Pepper Stadium.
