Cleary proud of turnaround in confidence

Press Conference: NRL Round 18

Wests Tigers Head Coach Ivan Cleary said he was proud of the way his side handled being down on confidence as they ended a run of four straight defeats with a 20-16 victory over the St. George-Illawarra Dragons at Jubilee Oval.

"We were down on confidence heading in to this game," he said.

"That's natural given the last couple of games we've had.

"When you're not going well, it becomes almost like you forget how to play well.

"We haven't won for like six weeks so we've definitely got a good reason to be happy.

"So that was the aim today — put together a performance that gives us a chance to win.

"We did that and managed to hold on at the end.

"If you're going to win any game in the NRL, you're going to have to come up with some big tackles and we haven't been doing that lately, so it was good to see the guys find a way to win."

While conceding that his side's form over the past month was disappointing, Cleary said he was pleased to see the way in which the team handled the struggle and turned it around on Sunday afternoon.

"The last couple of performances weren't great but they were different," he said.

"We had Moses and Robbie come in to the team and that changed things, and it wasn't like there was a real pattern there with the losses which can make it hard to pin-point what went wrong.

"Today was just about getting back to performing in a way that gave us a chance to win.

"Individually, we had to get the fundamentals and basics right and we did that."
