Match Report: NSW Cup Round 23

Western Suburbs Magpies have suffered a 24-20 loss to North Sydney Bears on Sunday afternoon in a tightly-fought contest at North Sydney Oval.

After Junior Pauga crossed early to give the Magpies the lead, North Sydney hit back ten minutes later through experienced hooker Ben Marschke.

Jacob Liddle, today playing in the unfamiliar lock forward position, crashed over to re-establish Western Suburbs’ advantage before young winger Ethan King scored to make it 10-10 at the break.

After the two sides again traded four-pointers to begin the half, with both Pauga and King securing their doubles, Bears forward Jordin Leiu scored his second try of the season to once again give North Sydney a narrow lead.

As this back-and-forth match took yet another turn, winger Trey Peni collected his seventh try in nine NSW Cup games this season before Jacob Preston gave the Bears a 24-20 lead they would hold on to for the remaining 14 minutes.

Western Suburbs Magpies play their final game of the Knock On Effect NSW Cup season against the Dragons next Sunday night at Leichhardt Oval.
