Jersey Flegg Cup - Round 24

Wests Tigers Jersey Flegg Cup side has fallen to a 24-18 defeat to Melbourne Storm at Lidcombe Oval in Round 24.

With Wests Tigers leading 12-6 at the break, Melbourne’s three second-half tries proved enough for the travelling Victorians to come away with two competition points.

Melbourne opened the afternoon’s scoring through bullocking back-rower Angus Hinchey, before Livai Saukuru crossed for the home side.

After spending most of this season playing for Western Suburbs in the NSW Cup, the try was Saukuru’s first of the season at Jersey Flegg Cup level.

Wests Tigers bagged another try after 26 minutes through Trey Peni, with the speedy winger helping his side to a 12-6 half-time advantage.

The two sides traded tries to open the second stanza, with Mitchell Jennings grabbing Melbourne’s second of the afternoon, before teenage fullback Heath Mason re-established the Wests Tigers lead.

The Australian Schoolboys star has impressed plenty since being elevated to Jersey Flegg from Western Suburbs’ SG Ball Cup team.

From there though, Melbourne managed to post two unanswered tries through Ali Okusitino and Ma’anaima Amosa, to secure a 24-18 victory in Round 24.
