Podcast: BTR Episode 29 with Jahream Bula

The final episode of Behind The Roar for 2023 features this year’s Kelly-Barnes Medallist, Jahream Bula.

Episode 29 with Jahream Bula will drop on Wednesday afternoon and is available on Apple, Spotify and YouTube.

We cover plenty of ground and reflect on a remarkable debut season which saw the 21-year-old collect the Player of the Year, Players’ Player, and Rookie of the Year awards.

He talks openly about his strong Christian faith, the influence of Benji Marshall, and his desire to remain at Wests Tigers for many years to come.

Jahream’s journey to Wests Tigers is not dissimilar to that of his new head coach. Like Benji, he moved from New Zealand to Queensland in his teens to attend renown rugby league school, Keebra Park State High.

He talks fondly of his first season in the top grade, including the build up to his NRL debut, when he and his father shed tears of joy.

He also reveals what it was like to get ‘folded’ by Jake Trbojevic on his first carry against the Sea Eagles.

We also talk about representative footy and his eligibility to play for multiple nations.  In fact, he gives us a scoop about who he’ll be playing for in October!

“To be honest, I never thought I'd make the NRL,” said Bula.

“I never got many big awards, I didn’t make the rep teams in Queensland, and so I never thought I'd be in this moment right now."

Bula says he owes a lot to Wests Tigers, his family, his partner, and most of all to God, for where is in life.

“I believe that every good thing that happens to me is because of God,” he said.

“Every trial that I go through, I'm not able to get through it without God.

“He's brought me this far and I'm so grateful for that.

God has put a lot of good people in my life.

A very talented basketballer with a middle name ‘Jordan’, Bulla tells how he only recently lost his passion for rugby league.

“I didn't want anything to do with rugby about two years ago. I just was just so focused on basketball at the time," he said.

Jahream also talks about the quality time he and his partner spend helping Indigenous youth, his ‘not so healthy’ eating habits, his favourite footy team as a kid, and his 'Jahream Destination'.
