Wests Tigers fielded seven teams in week one of the NSWRL junior representative season over the weekend, with four teams enjoying victories.

The first-round action kicked off with Wests Tigers two female teams playing back-to-back at Pointsbet Stadium against Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks.

Lisa Fiaola Cup (U/17s):

Wests Tigers vs Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks

It was the very first competitive match for our Lisa Fiaola team and the girls performed very well, defeating the Sharks 20-18, after scores were level 6-all at half time.

Coach’s Comment: Scott Clark

A big congratulations to our team on getting their very first win! It was a seesawing game with the team showing signs of how well they can play when they control the ball. The players defence did hold strong when required which was a real highlight.

The players’ smiles after the game and the energy when singing the winning team song showed how much it meant to the whole playing group.

Tarsha Gale Cup (U/19s):

Wests Tigers vs Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks

Our Tarsha Gale Cup team was desperately unlucky not to come away with victory. Down 14-4 at half time, the girls fought back, taking the game right down to the wire, losing 22-18.

Coach’s Comment: Adel Hage

After getting off to a slow start we showed great fight to get back into the game and we showed great resilience to stay in the game, unfortunately just falling short.

Cheyenne Baker and Kiani Duckett were outstanding playing their first games for the club and Tiana Lee Thorne was dangerous every time she touched the ball.

SG Ball Cup (U/19s):

Wests Magpies vs Many Warringah Sea Eagles

At 4 Pines Park, Brookvale where Wests Magpies SG Ball team fought back from an 8-nil deficit to defeat Manly Sea Eagles 42-18.

A strong Magpies lineup took control of the match in the second half after leading 14-12 at the break.  Tallyn Da Silva, Heath Mason and Nav Willett each bagged a double in the eight tries to four victory.

Coach’s Comment: Joey Saukuru

It was pleasing to see that we could post points when we really needed to, and we were able to do that on consecutive occasions.  There are a few areas of improvement we need to work on, including discipline, and we’ll address that as group.

Wests Harold Matthews Cup team had the first-round bye.

Harold Matthews Cup (U/17s):

Balmain Tigers vs Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks

Balmain Harold Matthews showed fight in the second half, but were unable to overcome a Sharks 22-nil half time lead.

Coach’s Comment: Tony Bazouni

We got into the arm wrestle early and we were heading in the right direction until some simple errors gave easy possession to the Sharks and they capitalised on each opportunity.

It was a better second half performance but was not enough to change the result of the game. Plenty of improvement to be had, and we’ve just got to keep working hard as a group.

One positive was the outstanding debut of hooker Taj Handsaker who was solid in defence all game and dangerous around the ruck.

SG Ball Cup (U19s):

Balmain Tigers vs Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks

The Tigers SG Ball team had a strong start against the Sharks only to fall away badly in the second half suffering a 44-18 loss.

Coach’s Comment: Chris Yates

This really was a game of two halves. We had them on the ropes, up 18-4 but a try against us just before half time and we never recovered.

We played some really good footy in the first half, but we need to work together as a group on our resilience.

Andrew Johns Cup (U16s):

Macarthur Wests Tigers vs Western Rams

Our Under 16s Macarthur Wests Tigers team got their season off to a great start defeating Western Rams 24-20 at Kirkam Oval, Camden.

Coach’s Comment: Harrison Fox

Our stats would say that we didn’t deserve to win this game but on the positive side we fought until the final whistle, scoring three tries in the final six minutes to secure the win.

We have plenty of points in us, but we must improve on completions, errors and penalties.

Laurie Daley Cup (U/18s):

Macarthur Wests Tigers vs Western Rams

Our Under 18s made to two from two for Macarthur Wests Tigers against the Rams, winning by four points.

Down 16-nil at half time our Laurie Daley Cup team fought back scoring all 26 points in the second half to secure victory.

Coach’s Comment: Mitch Tyler

Our ball security was a major concern in the first half but I was really pleased with our composure when we were in good attacking field position.  The fact that we can score 26 points in one half shows that we can compete at this level. Our try-line defence, and defence in general was strong.
