Pathways Wrap: Round 7

A look back at the weekend action from Wests Tigers pathways teams where one has qualified for a grand final and another remains unbeaten.

It was a tough time in Canberra for our NRL, NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg teams, but a super Sunday in Singleton for Macarthur Wests Tigers who have qualified for the Grand Final in the Andrew Johns Cup.

The Under 16s - who are all local players from the Macarthur-Group 6 region – defeated a strong Newcastle-Maitland Region Knights team 14-6 to book a place in the decider.

Pathways and Junior Recruitment Manager, Shannon Gallant is delighted for the players and the areas they represent.

“This is a great story not just for this team but also for the Macarthur and Group 6 regions,” said Gallant.

It’s another example of what can be achieved in our junior catchment areas with collaboration and a ‘team first’ approach.

Congratulations also to Macarthur Wests Tigers Under 18s on making the semi-finals in the Laurie Daley Cup, going down 28-16 to the Northern Tigers.

Elsewhere, Wests Magpies remain unbeaten and at the top of the ladder in the Harold Matthews Cup after beating the Rabbitohs 26-14 in Camden. The team has now won six from six.

Despite suffering a heavy loss to the Rabbitohs in the SG Ball Cup on Saturday, the Magpies are fifth on the 16-team ladder, and well placed for a spot in the finals.

Wests Tigers Under 17s female side is also on track to play finals footy in the Lisa Fiaola Cup, after suffering just their second loss of the season.

A team full of local juniors was unable to match it with the unbeaten Bulldogs who put 94 points on the Sea Eagles in the previous round.

Knock On Effect NSW Cup

Wests Magpies vs Canberra Raiders

Coach – Aaron Payne

We were never in the contest because of our own errors and poor discipline. It was a very disappointing start to the season for us below the standards we have set as a group.

We must develop the ability to stay in the contest when things go against us.

Jersey Flegg Cup (U/21s)

Wests Tigers vs Canberra Raiders

Coach – Leon Latulipe

We let ourselves down with individual errors compounded by penalties and just couldn't get back into the game. The players did what they could to try and get back in the contest, but it was too late to affect a positive outcome.

It’s back to the drawing board at training on Tuesday, and we need to be better.

SG Ball Cup (U/19s)

Balmain Tigers vs Canterbury Bulldogs

Coach – Chris Yates

Our boys played tough on the weekend and the scoreline did not reflect their effort. I thought our debutants all had good game; Jack Hanratty steered the team around the park, Marley Skeen was heavily involved, and Charles Manapori-Reu was very tough through the middle.

SG Ball Cup (U/19s)

Wests Magpies vs South Sydney Rabbitohs

Coach – Joey Saukuru

Clearly it was not a good day for the Wests SG Ball team with far too many handling errors meaning we had to do more than our fair share of defence.

Factor in fatigue, ill-discipline and it becomes a day we’d all like to forget. We’ve got a week to regroup and bounce back against the Roosters.

Harold Matthews Cup (U/17s)

Balmain Tigers vs Canterbury Bulldogs

Coach – Tony Bazouni

Although results have gone against us on the scoreboard this season, there have been improvements from across the park, and I cannot fault the players’ effort.

We will continue to work hard in training this week and determined to finish the season strongly.

Harold Matthews Cup (U/17s)

Wests Magpies vs South Sydney

Coach – Stephen Isdale

The boys faced a very good Rabbitohs side who came out fast, scoring early in the piece. We didn’t panic, stuck to what we trained for and believed in our processes. We broke Souths down by being patient.

I was really happy with edge forward Phoenix Godinet, Alex Isdale’s kicking game kept Souths at bay and Siotame Havea Jnr tied down the middle.

Tarsha Gale Cup (U/19s)

Wests Tigers vs Canterbury Bulldogs

Coach – Adel Hage

It was a tough performance from the girls on the weekend against a good team.

Early errors and a mountain of possession gave our opposition way too much field territory and even though we defended well, it was too much.

A lot of lessons learnt, and we will work hard moving forward to rectify our mistakes.

Lisa Fiaola Cup (U/17s)

Wests Tigers vs Canterbury Bulldogs

Coach – Scott Clark

Our team might have lost to the Bulldogs, but they showed for a good period that they could match it with them. The Bulldogs jumped out of the blocks very well and suddenly we were down by 20 points and with a player in the sin bin.

Although the result did not go our way, the team has taken a lot of confidence out of the game.

We will regroup fast and work on the things that we need to, to better ourselves for the remaining two games of the regular season.

Laurie Daley Cup (U/18s)

Macarthur Wests Tigers vs Northern Tigers

Coach – Mitch Tyler

It was a tough way for this team to end its season in the Laurie Daley Cup.  After a great performance in the first half where we completed at 90% and went into the break 16-nil up, we fell away badly in the second half.  In short, we gave away too many penalties, gifted them field position, and they made us pay.

It was hard to be in the sheds after the game seeing this young group of men shattered after putting in such a strong effort all season.

Andrew Johns Cup (U/16s)

Macarthur Wests Tigers vs Newcastle-Maitland Knights

Coach - Harrison Fox

Our boys were aware of the challenge that was in front of them playing an in-form and gutsy Knights team in Newcastle, and they rose to the occasion.

We were strong in defence and found success against the Knights in attack to book a place in the grand final.
