Match Preview: NSW Cup Round 6 vs Dragons

Wests Magpies will play St George Illawarra Dragons in Round 6 of the Knock On Effect NSW Cup as part of a double-header at Lidcombe Oval on Saturday.

Magpies coach Aaron Payne is calling for his players to ‘pack their shoulders’ against the Dragons following last weekend’s heavy loss to Melbourne feeder club, North Sydney Bears.

Prior to that the team had a solid win over the Eels at CommBank Stadium following a heartbreaking, last-minute loss to Newtown Jets.

The Dragons are coming off back-to-back wins over Blacktown Workers and Newcastle Knights but like the Magpies have also suffered a heavy loss to the Bears.

In team news for the home side Luke Laulilii and Jordan Miller both retain their place in the side after strong performances on debut last week.

Tyler Colley will make his club debut joining Iverson Matai in the halves.

Coach Comments – Aaron Payne

Our focus this week will be around our attitude towards defence, something we were poor with last week.

We played the Dragons in a trial match earlier this year in Mudgee where they were way too strong for us, so this is an opportunity to get one back on them.

Their strengths lie in their forwards who are very powerful so it’s crucial that we pack our shoulders this week.

The NSW Cup match will follow the Jersey Flegg Cup clash which sees Wests Tigers also up against the Red V.
