Starring performances from Marc Tannous and Logan Brookes have helped Balmain to an impressive 28-16 win over the Magpies in Round 1 of the SG Ball Cup.
After a first half that ebbed-and-flowed, a strong second half from the visitors ensured they came away with the two competition points.
It was Balmain who scored the first points of the afternoon when Xavier Tauaifaiga stepped his way over after 10 minutes.
Ali Karnib then dummied his way through to post the Magpies’ first, and the powerful back grabbed his second via a penalty try when he was pushed off the ball as he went to plant it down in the corner.
Balmain started the second half with a bang, as a slick Marc Tannous cut-out ball sent winger, Joseph Partch on his way to the line.

Prop, Zane Farr-McKay then crashed over after 43 minutes to once again give the Tigers the lead, before Will Stone powered his way through to put Balmain further ahead.
The Magpies did manage to give the Tigers a scare though, when a break through the middle of the field allowed skipper, Archie Duncombe to send a supporting Riley Oitmann under the posts after 59 minutes.
A 67th-minute try to middle-forward Jordan Bunt wrapped up the contest for Balmain though, with the Tigers emerging 28-16 victors at Campbelltown.

Front-rower, Ella Walker, then charged over to extend the home side’s lead, before the Roosters mounted a second-half fightback.
The Tricolours displayed some impressive ball movement and offloading throughout the contest and tries to Tyra Ekepati and Mahlie Cashin ensured the match would go right down to the wire.

Venue: Campbelltown Sports Stadium, Sydney
The Western Suburbs Magpies have emerged 42-4 winners over the Balmain Tigers in Round 1 of the Harold Matthews Cup.
A fast start from the Magpies had Balmain on the back foot from the outset and four tries to middle forward, Jake Gaffney put Wests on their way to a big victory.
The Magpies capitalised on some early field position after three minutes, with Elijah Sefo diving on a Curtis Lakeman grubber kick to open the scoring for Wests.
Balmain looked to have scored their own try from a grubber kick shortly after, however it was ruled out for offside.
A crisp short ball from Brock Achurch then put skipper, Siotame Havea Jr. over under the posts, and in the 20th minute, Lakeman produced a terrific cutout ball for Jordan Truckle to score in the corner.

Gaffney crashed over for his first to make it a 20-0 lead for Wests, and when Balmain winger, Braidyn Wood was sin-binned early in the second half, the Magpies ran away with the contest.
Impressive winger James Lanyon produced a long run down the left touch-line before kicking the ball inside for Gaffney to plant it down for his second.
In the 46th minute, Yacoub Al Jida produced a one-on-one strip and offloaded to Jhevon Lele, with the impressive five-eighth racing to the corner to score the Magpies’ sixth of the day.

CC Roosters
Venue: Campbelltown Sports Stadium, Sydney
Wests Tigers have fallen to a convincing 28-0 defeat to the Central Coast Roosters in the opening round of the Lisa Fiaola Cup.
After having a bulk of the early field position, the home side was unable to post points and then struggled to regain a foothold in the match.
A right-side shift culminated in the first points of the contest to Roosters centre, Marley Gristwood, before a wicked bounce of the ball led to the Tricolours' second try, through Mia Vaotuua.

A number of quality offloads put Gristwood over for her second of the day, before Kewa Kahuroa bulldozed her way to the line for the Roosters’ fourth.
Impressive five-eighth, Vaotuua, went on to grab two more tries and secure a hat-trick, with the Central Coast Roosters coming away with a 28-0 victory.
