Report: NRL Round 14 vs Panthers

Wests Tigers have fallen just short in a Round 14 thriller at CommBank Stadium, going down 18-14 to the Panthers.

Scores were locked up at 10-10 at half-time, and Penrith just managed to scrape home in a match jam-packed with dramatic turning points.

A Jeral Skelton bone-rattler on Izack Tago early in the contest proved that Wests Tigers were up for the fight, however the Panthers were first to score through Tom Jenkins.

It was Jarome Luai who set up the first Wests Tigers try of the afternoon, with a neat grubber kick weighted perfectly for Starford To’a.

The home side then hit the front in the 26th minute when Sunia Turuva scored off a neat backline shift to the right. The Fijian international winger got the ‘claw’ out too, with some big celebrations in front of the home fans.

Jenkins scored a second right before half-time though to make it 10-10 at the break.

Penrith went on to slot a penalty goal via a controversial kick pressure penalty to give the visitors a two-point lead, before Jenkins grabbed his third in the corner.

Cleary’s conversion made it 18-10 but Wests Tigers ensured this match would go down to the wire, as Adam Doueihi put Skelton over in the 69th minute to make it 18-14.

Despite their best efforts and going extremely close on numerous occasions, including Jahream Bula being dragged down just inches short, Penrith held on to emerge victorious in this Round 14 showdown.

Panthers 18 (Jenkins 3 tries; Cleary 3/4 goals) defeated Wests Tigers 14 (To'a, Turuva, Skelton tries; Doueihi 1/3 goals) at CommBank Stadium.
