Report: NRL Round 16 vs Raiders

Wests Tigers have fallen to a narrow 16-12 loss to the Canberra Raiders at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.

Trailing 16-0 at the break, the home side fought their way back into the match, but just couldn’t land that final blow to secure victory.

Early in the contest, after a period of sustained pressure for the Tigers, Jarome Luai lost the ball over the line in attempting to score after 11 minutes.

A successful captain’s challenge then resulted in points for the Raiders, as Joe Tapine steamed through a hole to put the visitors on the board.

Debutant Jed Stuart was next to score for Canberra, with Sebastian Kris flick passing to his winger for a second try.

Kris helped create their next four-pointer too, as the centre sent Ethan Strange racing down the sideline before Tom Starling toed the ball ahead. Jeral Skelton then fumbled the ball in the in-goal, allowing Starling to touch down for a 23rd minute try.

The score remained 16-0 until the half-time break, however Wests Tigers ensured they were first to score in the second period. A neat Luai grubber kick produced points for back-rower, Alex Seyfarth.

Wests Tigers went back-to-back just five minutes later too, as an Adam Doueihi line-break set up a try on the very next play. A shift to the right through Luai and Seyfarth allowed Starford To’a to score in the corner.

Despite a number of near misses though, Wests Tigers weren’t able to score a final try to level or steal the match, with the final score reading 16-12 at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.

Raiders 16 (Tapine, Stuart, Starling tries; Fogarty 2/3 goals) defeated Wests Tigers 12 (Seyfarth, To'a tries; Doueihi 2/2 goals) at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.
