Report: NSW Cup Round 16 vs Dragons

Western Suburbs Magpies have fallen to a 38-18 defeat to the Dragons in Round 16 of the NSW Cup.

After trailing 20-6 at half time, Wests brought themselves back within two points in the second period, however, ultimately fell short.

It was the Dragons’ outside backs who caused the Magpies’ trouble early, as Sione Finau, Tyrell Sloan and Nathan Lawson scored early to give the home side a 16-0 lead after as many minutes.

Cody Ramsey produced a brilliant flick pass for Sloan’s second of the afternoon, before the Magpies got themselves on the board.

Tristan Hope caught the Dragons defenders napping, as he tapped and ran himself from 5 metres out to score.

The Magpies then got themselves back into the match early in the second half, as Izaac Tu’itupou crossed in the corner.

Kurt Falls’ conversion meant the Magpies trailed by just eight points at 20-12 and they reduced the deficit to two-points shortly after, when Hope put Tony Sukkar over after 61 minutes.

From there though, a Magpies error off the kick-off allowed Connor Muhleisen to score against the run of play and bring the scoreline back to 26-18.

Emre Guler then powered his way to the line to extend the St. George Illawarra lead, before Lawson scored the final four-pointer of the afternoon.

Jonah Glover’s conversion meant the final score at Collegians Sporting Complex read 38-18 in favour of the Dragons.

Dragons 38 (Sloan 2, Lawson 2, Finau, Muhleisen, Guler tries; Glover 5/7 goals) defeated Magpies 18 (Hope, Tu'itupou, Sukkar tries; Falls 3/3 goals) at Collegians Sporting Complex.
