Aaron Payne to depart from NSW Cup coaching role

Wests Tigers can confirm that NSW Cup Head Coach, Aaron Payne will not return to lead the Western Suburbs Magpies for the 2026 season.

Payne – who has spent two seasons in charge of the Magpies – has made the decision to return home to North Queensland for family reasons.

Having recently been named in the North Queensland Cowboys 30-year team having made 219 first grade appearances, Payne brought extensive experience and leadership to the NSW Cup group, in addition to supporting the Wests Tigers NRL program.

The Magpies finished 9th under Payne’s leadership in 2025, with the former hooker instrumental in elevating the performance of the Wests Tigers feeder program.

On his departure from the Wests Tigers, Payne said he had thoroughly enjoyed his time at Concord.

“It’s been a great experience working with this group of players and helping them strive to be better every day,” Payne said.

“It’s been really satisfying to see so many take that step into NRL and continue their development and growth.

“I’m grateful to the club for their support and the opportunities they’ve provided over the past two seasons.”

“Aaron has been a great addition to our NSW Cup program and has made a significant impact on our playing group,” Betsey said.

“While we’re sad to see him leave, we understand his reasons for doing so. We’re thankful for his hard work and dedication over the last two years and wish him all the best for the future.”
