The Wests Tigers are pleased to announce the appointment of Tyrone McCarthy, who will lead the Club’s Knock On Effect NSW Cup program – via the Western Suburbs Magpies – for the 2026 season.

McCarthy – who has held roles throughout the South Sydney Rabbitohs and Warrington Wolves development ranks – brings ample experience as a player and coach into what is an important role within the Club’s Men’s Pathway.
In addition to his experience as a coach, McCarthy amassed more than 130 first grade appearances in the United Kingdom, which included two successful Challenge Cup campaigns (2009, 2012) and 17 caps for Ireland.
The second-rower also spent time in Australia in both the QLD Cup (Northen Pride) and NSW Cup (Illawarra), securing two Premierships and NRL State Championships (2014, 2016).
Wests Tigers CEO, Shane Richardson welcomed this latest appointment to the broader coaching team.

“We’re pleased to have Tyrone on board and leading our NSW Cup program, he has a great understanding of this competition as both a player and coach and knows what it takes to be successful,” Richardson said.
“We believe he brings the right mix of experience across the coaching pathway and will be a great cultural fit for our wider coaching group. This is important as Tyrone will play an integral role in not only preparing individual players for a transition into the NRL, but ensuring the program is successful in its own right.
“He will work closely with our Pathways coaches at Western Suburbs and Balmain, while also aligning with Benji and the NRL program on the development of several players in our Top 30 and Development Squad,” Richardson concluded.

Newly appointed Western Suburbs Magpies Head Coach, Tyrone McCarthy was pleased to be joining such an experienced and diverse coaching team.
“There are some great people around the Club who I’m looking forward to working alongside, as well as some wonderfully talented players,” McCarthy said.
“There’s been a lot of great things happening at the Wests Tigers and I’m looking forward to bringing my ideas and philosophies to the NSW Cup program and being a part of what’s next.
“I know first-hand just how much talent comes through the Magpies system which is an exciting opportunity for me as a coach. I’ve got an important role in creating an environment that gives those players every opportunity to eventually progress through to the NRL and help bring success to the club.
“I’m grateful to Richo and the Board for their support and I can’t wait to get our preparation for next season underway,” McCarthy concluded.
McCarthy will commence his role in mid-October.
