Undefeated Andrew Johns Cup side ready to roar into finals footy

We caught up with Head Coach, Adam Whitelaw ahead of this weekend’s clash with the Illawarra South Coast Steelers to reflect on their season, the squad’s growth, and upcoming finals footy.

For Whitelaw, he’s proud of not only the results so far this season, but the depth his U16s side possesses.

“Last year I used nowhere near as many players. Whereas this season I’ve been able to give a lot of opportunities to guys to represent the Club,” Whitelaw said.

“That’s something really positive moving forward, the amount of depth we've got in this age group.”

By the end of this weekend, 28 players will have taken the field throughout the season. This has allowed Whitelaw to test different combinations for his side – remaining unbeaten has highlighted the depth and resilience of his team.

While there has been a strong collective output, there have also been standout individual performances across the park.

Captain, Masen Mallia has been ‘phenomenal’ according to Whitelaw, guiding his team in every game from the halves.

Hooker, Jesse Ropata also drew plaudits from Whitelaw, having taken on a new position with confidence.

“Jesse’s been outstanding. It’s his first season playing hooker, and I think he’s definitely found a new position.

“I give an award out each week for stats and Jyai Milford was the recipient in the opening two rounds – he’s been great for us as well.”

Despite the Tigers undefeated run, their coach believes there's still more to come.

“I don’t think we’ve hit our best yet, that’s definitely to come in the next few weeks.”

That confidence in his side will be tested this Saturday as they travel to Wollongong to take on the Steelers in what he describes as a ‘semi-final come early’.

A win away this weekend will secure his team a home semi-final and an early advantage as they look to continue their winning ways.

Whitelaw is aware of the talent they are going up against, but believes his team is ready for any challenge they face.

“I’ve got so much confidence in this group of players. It doesn’t bother me who we play.”

Building up to the finals, the Macarthur side isn’t just striving for success this season, they’re showcasing the future of what the Wests Tigers Pathways have to look forward to in the coming seasons.
