The Wests Tigers would like to extend their congratulations to Jade Fonua on the announcement she is expecting her first child later this year.
The Tongan International recently confirmed the exciting news to teammates and staff, as preparations for the 2026 NRLW season begin to ramp up.
While Fonua awaits the arrival of the newest member of her family, she will be unavailable for the upcoming NRLW season and will work closely with the Club to ensure she is supported throughout that time.
This will include keeping her involved in the organisation and connected with her teammates as she prepares for motherhood.
The Wests Tigers are proud to have an in-house physio specialising in women’s health that will support Fonua on her pregnancy journey, as well as the needs of the entire squad across the season in what is a league-leading initiative.
Wests Tigers Head of Women’s Football, Charmain Steventon congratulated Jade on this latest news.
“We’re so happy for Jade. It’s such an exciting time for her family, friends and teammates and we’re looking forward to supporting her on this pregnancy journey,” Steventon said.
“We’ve worked hard as a Club to ensure we have the right processes in place – everything from staffing and facilities to training and support programs. We’re committed to making a positive impact during what’s such a special time in a young woman’s life.
“Jade will have access to all those services and resources here at the Club."
Steventon said the Club had taken lessons from its work with NRLW squad member, Rikeya Horne, following the arrival of Azaria and Titus in 2025.
“We saw there was room to develop our already strong system of support, ensuring our players are not having to decide between motherhood and their professional career,” Steventon added.
“This is all part of our family-first approach, ensuring we take care of our athletes during important stages of their life.
“On behalf of everyone at the Wests Tigers, I’d like to congratulate Jade on the announcement of her first child.”
Wests Tigers NRLW Head Coach, Craig Sandercock congratulated Fonua on her pending arrival.
“It’s an exciting time for Jade and her family and as a squad and staff we couldn’t be happier for her,” Sandercock said.
“We’ll be ensuring Jade stays connected with the group right throughout this year. She might not be out on the field with us, but she’ll continue to play a role throughout the season.
“I think it’s fantastic what the Club is doing, led by Charmain, to support Jade and I know the players and staff are looking forward to meeting the newest arrival later this year.”
An announcement regarding Fonua’s replacement in the Top 24 squad will be made in due course.
