Pathways Weekend Wrap: NSW Cup secure another big win

The Wests Tigers Pathways sides were spread across several venues over the weekend, as Jersey Flegg returned to the winner's circle and the Knock-On Effect NSW Cup secured big back-to-back wins.

NSW Cup vs Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles: 46-12 victory

Western Suburbs Magpies continued their giant killing ways in the NSW Cup with a 46-12 victory over the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles at Campbelltown Sports Stadium on Saturday.

The Magpies led 16-6 at half-time before putting the Sea Eagles to the sword in the second half with Wests running in eight tries to two in the Round 16 match.

It was another impressive performance from the Magpies following their 68-8 victory over the Sydney Roosters at Lidcombe Oval just six days earlier

Centre Luke Laulilii opened the scoring against the Sea Eagles in the ninth minute after he crossed over untouched out wide for a 4-0 lead.

The Magpies made it 10-0 when Tino Tavana strolled over after a break down the right flank before conceding a try to Manly to have the margin reduced to four.

Wests centre Solomone Saukuru gave the Magpies a 10-point lead at half-time when he showed brute strength to push off a defender after a solid break to score next to the posts.

Laulilii grabbed his second try four minutes after the break when he latched onto a lovely cut out pass from halfback Javon Andrews for a 22-6 lead.

Winger Fiohiva Siale Fainga'a extended the lead to 28-6 after 54 minutes after he swooped on a spilt bomb to cross in the corner.

The onslaught continued when fullback Jack Attard backed up a break from dummy half from Jared Haywood to cross under the posts for a 34-6 lead.

Wests reached the 40 points mark when Tavana scored his second try, before Peter Taateo crossed for a commanding 46-6 lead after 70 minutes.

The Sea Eagles then scored a late consolation try for the 46-12 scoreline.

The win moved the Magpies to seventh place with six wins from 13 games ahead of the bye next weekend.

Jersey Flegg Cup vs Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles: 32-24 victory

Wests Tigers returned to their winning ways in the Jersey Flegg Cup with a 32-24 victory over Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles at Lidcombe Oval on Saturday.

Trailing 12-10 at half-time, the Tigers rallied to race in four second half tries to end a two-game losing streak in the Round 16 contest.

Down 6-0 after 10 minutes, the Tigers drew level through winger Jack Nicholas after he planted the ball down in the left corner following a fine backline play in the 14th minute.

The Tigers jumped to a 10-6 lead after centre Maxwell Taotua backed up a nice short side play down the right flank to cross out wide in the 31st minute.
Manly then scored a converted try right on half-time for the two-point lead at the break.

After conceding an early second half try to trail 18-10, the Tigers bounced back with a fine converted try to winger Filipe Huahulu to get back within four after 55 minutes.

Twelve minutes later, the Tigers took a 20-18 lead through a try to second-rower Pheonix Godinet, who pounced on a spilt grubber kick out wide.

A minute later, prop Christian Taupau-Moors – backing up from U19 State of Origin duties – showed great strength and leg speed to crash over next to the posts for a 26-18 scoreline.

Manly then threw a scare in the Tigers camp with a try to five-eighth Beau Alexander to leave the visitors trailing 26-24 with five minutes remaining.

However, the win was sealed when Taupau-Moors used his giant frame to again barge through the Sea Eagles for his second try right on full-time.

In the end, the Tigers ran in six tries to four with fullback Logan Deininger kicking four from six goals.

The Tigers have now won eight of their 12 matches to sit in third place ahead of a bye next weekend.

NSW Women’s Premiership vs Newcastle Knights: 20-14 defeat

Wests Tigers suffered their first defeat of the season with a 20-14 loss to the Newcastle Knights in Round 2 of the NSW Women’s Premiership at Maitland Sports Ground on Sunday.

The Tigers got off to a brilliant start after second-rower Saige Tautalafua ran onto a superb cut out pass from five-eighth Amirah El-Abdallah for a 4-0 lead after 13 minutes.

The Knights took an 8-4 lead into half-time after winger Tyla Brown scored twice in five minutes.

Tautalafua then crossed for her second try in the 41st minute to level the scores after running off a short ball from El-Abdallah.

However, Newcastle regained the lead five minutes later after a quick shift to the right saw winger Damita Betham dive over in the corner for a 12-8 scoreline.

Powerful Tigers forward Folau Vaki then carried several defenders over the line to score next to the posts to give Wests a 14-12 lead after 50 minutes.

Nine minutes later, Brown crossed for her hat-trick for a 16-14 lead before the Knights secured victory with a try to centre Mariah Brown in the 64th minute.

The loss follows a first round 22-all draw against the Central Coast Roosters at Lidcombe Oval last week.

The Tigers return home to Lidcombe Oval on Saturday, 27 June to tackle the undefeated South Sydney Rabbitohs at 12pm.

The match will be shown live on BarTV.
