More than 450 emerging Wests Tigers players came together at the inaugural Pathways Club Connection Day at Eagle Vale Sports High School on Monday.
Players from the Club’s U13, 14 and 15 male and female RISE programs took part in the event, with representatives from Macarthur Wests Tigers, Balmain Tigers, and Group 6 in attendance. The girls' program also featured Wests Tigers RISE athletes.
Designed to strengthen connections across the Wests Tigers Pathways system, the day exposed players to a range of high-performance environments both on and off the field.
Alongside positional training sessions and field testing, players were introduced to gym education, mobility and recovery practices.
They also heard from Wests Tigers wellbeing staff about the importance of developing as people first.
Wests Tigers Pathways Coordinator, Brad Speechley said the day was created to maximise player development, whilst giving athletes experiences beyond regular football training.
"We wanted to bring everyone together and expose the players to things they probably wouldn't normally experience," Speechley said.
"There's only a limited amount of on-field training we can do, so this was about making the most of our time by introducing them to high-performance habits, whether that's in the gym, recovery, mobility or learning about what it takes outside the football field."
Speechley said an important part of the day was helping players understand that becoming an elite footballer extends far beyond game day.
"We're looking at building a Wests Tigers classroom where players can continue to learn about football off the field," he added.
"Everyone learns differently, and we want our players to understand how much work goes into becoming an NRL or NRLW player away from training and matches."
The day also provided an opportunity for players from different regions and age groups to build relationships across the Club's Pathways system.
Speechley was encouraged by the continued growth of the Club's female Pathways, describing the increasing participation as an exciting step forward for Wests Tigers.
"Our squads are bigger than they've ever been, which is really exciting," he said.
"It's an exciting step forward for what we're trying to build. The girls' numbers are up, and that's a true indication that the game is continuing to grow.
"There were plenty of familiar faces returning, but it was also great to welcome so many new players into our system. Seeing that mix is really encouraging for the future."
The collaborative approach from coaches and staff was another highlight of the day.
"The coaching staff and volunteers were outstanding," Speechley stated.
"It was great seeing male coaches working with the girls, female coaches working with the boys, and everyone supporting each other. That's what makes us stronger as a Club.
“It was also great for our players to see what's available at Eagle Vale Sports High School because not everyone attends a specialised sports high school.
“To see the facilities and the pathways available was a fantastic opportunity for many. It's another way we can help develop them as both people and players."
