Wests Tigers half-backs Raecene McGregor and Jock Madden will forever be linked together in the club’s history books for two magical moments last weekend.
McGregor and Madden both kicked the winning field goals to get the Wests Tigers NRLW and NRL teams home, 27-26, and 25-24, respectively, on the weekend of August 22-23.
It was the first time a club has won by a point in the NRL and NRLW on the same weekend.
Ironically, both players kicked their field goals in the last two minutes after seeing their team’s lead run down.
The first came through McGregor at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday when the Kiwi Ferns Test captain landed a 15-metre field goal two minutes from full-time for a 27-26 lead, and in the end victory, over the Newcastle Knights.
The field goal proved vital after the Knights fought back from a 26-6 deficit to level the scores with three minutes remaining.
A drop ball by Newcastle then led to McGregor landing her first field goal in her distinguished career.
A day later, Madden repeated the dose against the Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium on Sunday to get the Wests Tigers home against the competition leaders.
Locked at 12-all at half-time, Wests Tigers raced to a 24-12 lead before the Roosters charged home to level the scores at 24-all with two minutes remaining.
With the Roosters on the attack, prop Naufahu Whyte threw a loose offload which saw Tigers prop Terrell May intercept the ball to give the Tigers the chance to set up for a field goal.
Madden stepped up when it mattered, slotting a field goal under pressure from 30 metres for a 25-24 win in one of the Wests Tigers’ greatest ever victories.
Although the field goals have linked the pair together, there are also some very familiar traits between McGregor and Madden through the Wests Tigers.
Both played returned to Wests Tigers in 2026 after previous stints at the club.
McGregor was involved in the club’s Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership program prior to securing an NRLW licence while Madden played at Wests Tigers in 2021-22.
Furthermore, both played for the Brisbane Broncos - McGregor in the NRLW in 2019-2020, and Madden 2023-24.
Whatever McGregor and Madden now go on to achieve, there is little doubt they will be fondly remembered at Wests Tigers for that one magical weekend in August, 2026.
