Our Proud History
The Wests Tigers were formed in 1999 as a joint venture between the Balmain Tigers and Western Suburbs Magpies, entering the NRL in 2000 and winning their first premiership in 2005.
The two historic Sydney based rugby league clubs had played in the NSWRL since it was founded in 1908. Today, the Wests Tigers still proudly represent the Inner West and the Macarthur regions.
The Wests Tigers name reflects the heritage of the tiger emblem from Balmain and the nickname of the Western Suburbs Magpies (Wests).
Early Years
The newly formed club entered the 2000 NRL season with a mix of players from both clubs and several high-profile recruits.
Balmain, NSW and Australian legend Wayne Pearce was the inaugural coach. ‘Junior’ stepped down at the end of 2000 with former Wests and Canterbury player Terry Lamb taking over.
It was the appointment of Tim Sheens, a three-time premiership-winning coach, in 2003, along with CEO Steve Noyce, that brought stability to the club.
The club began to find its footing in 2004, with the emergence of young talents like Robbie Farah, Benji Marshall, and Liam Fulton.
Experienced players such as Brett Hodgson, Pat Richards, Paul Whatuira, Shane Elford, Scott Sattler, and Scott Prince strengthened the squad.
In 2005, the Wests Tigers achieved a historic milestone by winning their first NRL premiership, defeating the North Queensland Cowboys 30-16 in a memorable Grand Final.
2005 – The Fairytale
Even today, It's still one of the great mysteries in rugby league history.

On the biggest stage of all, the Tigers delivered the performance that would etch their names into rugby league history.
The Grand Final will forever be remembered for THAT moment - Benji Marshall fielded a kick in his own half, weaved through defenders, and produced his immortal flick pass for Pat Richards to score a length-of-the-field try.
Although the club has experienced some challenging years since their last finals appearance in 2011, the Wests Tigers continue to build a strong platform across all grades in their pursuit of premiership success.

The Rebuild
Following the 2025 season, the Wests Tigers underwent a complete rebuild of their NRLW program in order to be competitive.
The appointment of Head Coach Craig Sandercock and his hard-working staff saw the Wests Tigers form a very strong team full of talented youngsters and experienced players headed by Captain Kezie Apps, who had been there from the beginning.
It led to the Wests Tigers making the NRLW finals for the first time.
Although beaten 6-0 by Canberra, a powerful statement had been made - that the Wests Tigers have finally arrived on the NRLW stage.
