Wests Tigers Jersey Flegg have produced a stunning upset to down the Newcastle Knights 34-20 at St. John's Oval on Saturday — keeping the door ajar for a possible finals finish.
After a heavy 32-point defeat the week prior in the nation's capital, Wests Tigers looked to be up against it this week against a Knights side inside the top four and looking to mount a potential minor premiership challenge, but showed marked improvement from the week prior to lead the match from start to finish.
Liam Scolari's double inside the opening 10 minutes paved the way for what was to come for Wests Tigers, with Lucas Castle and Rua Ngati also crossing in the first half to give the visitors a surprise 18-8 lead at the half-time break.
Cameron Davies' effort after half-time gave the Knights some hope of a comeback, but Shondre Lee-Silva and Daniel Sykes both responded for Wests Tigers to ensure that their lead would never really be troubled by the home side.
Ben Seufale and Luke Huth were both sent to the sin-bin late on after a coming together, but that did little to deter the focus of Wayne Lambkin's side as they continued to control proceedings to emerge with a 14-point win in the end.
Currently sitting in 10th position, Wests Tigers can move to within one point of the top eight next Saturday when they take on the Sea Eagles at HE Laybutt Field before two huge away games against the top-four Bulldogs and Panthers.
Wests Tigers 34 (Scolari 2, Castle, Ngati, Lee-Silva, Sykes tries; Stevanovic 5/6 goals) def. Newcastle Knights 22 (Anderson, Talty, Davies, Huth tries; Davies 1/2, Searle 1/2 goals) at St. John's Oval
